We can now see the first look at Leslie Grace’s Batgirl live in action, thanks to Twitter. This short video posted by @BatgirlFilm appears to show the upcoming Batgirl film in production. In the brief clip, you can see a red van with some writing moving down a street. Then the camera tilts up to a scaffold. Someone costumed as Batgirl aka Barbara Gordon is watching the action below. It is unclear whether it is the actress Leslie Grace or a stunt person in the costume. However, the vividly purple costume and glimpse of long auburn hair matches a photo already released. You can see the clip here:
Batgirl with Leslie Grace is set to be one of Warner Bros’ upcoming DCEU films. It is slated to be released on HBO Max sometime in 2022. This is promising to be a very busy year for the DCEU. The Flash is expected to be released. So is the Dwayne Johnson-starring Black Adam, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. With four films in active development, it appears Warner Bros is eager to make up for past missteps. After the debacle that was the theatrical release of Justice League and the accompanying fallout around replacement director Joss Whedon, the future of the DCEU seemed shaky. But the unexpected success of the HBO Max streaming release Zack Snyder’s Justice League seems to have revitalized things.
Leslie Grace was cast as Batgirl aka Barbara Gordon in July of 2021. She is the latest of several female-led DCEU projects. After the success of Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman 1984 and Birds of Prey fared less well both critically and at the box office. But as major studios move more towards streaming releases, there appears to be more opportunities available. Batgirl is set to be directed by the team of Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. The pair last helmed Bad Boys for Life, the Will Smith and Martin Lawrence action comedy reboot. This will be their first foray into the booming world of superhero films.
But Warner Bros doesn’t appear to be taking any chances. Batgirl has been confirmed to feature a returning Michael Keaton as Batman, as will The Flash. In addition to Leslie Grace as the title character, it will also star Jurnee Smollett reprising the character of Black Canary. She last appeared as the character in Birds of Prey. J.K Simmons will also continue to pull double duty between the MCU and DCEU as Commissioner Jim Gordon. In comics continuity, Batgirl has most often been portrayed as the daughter of the commissioner, and presumably will be here as well.
Details of Leslie Grace’s character and the plot of Batgirl are still scarce. But we have already seen hints the film will feature The Council of Owls, a longtime Batman adversary. Resurgent film star and Internet darling Brendan Fraser will also appear as the arsonist villain Firefly. But until it is released later this year, we will just have to keep you updated with whatever new clues we find.
