Batgirl Cancelation Nearly Led To A DC Higher-Up Leaving The Company
DC was clearly not on board with the cancelation of Batgirl, as one of the higher-ups in the company nearly quit after hearing the news.
The cancelation of Batgirl has sent shockwaves through the film world. Plenty of people were upset about Warner Bros. Discovery making such a drastic move. The worst part is that the film was reportedly near finished, and the conglomerate decided to cancel a $90 million dollar venture. The directors of the film shared messages of support from fellow filmmakers like Kevin Feige (head of Marvel Studios). Leslie Grace (Batgirl) also shared a “thank you” and behind-the-scenes photos from the now canceled feature. It’s no secret that many people were upset about the film being canceled. This includes Walter Hamada, head of DC Films, who nearly walked out after hearing the news.
We sympathize with everyone involved in the production. Batgirl was meant to premiere this year, and now we will never see it. Even worse was Michael Keaton was meant to return as Batman, and now we are not sure that is ever going to happen. DC seems to be a mess, and Walter Hamada nearly walked out of his high-profile job because of the decision made by the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, David Zaslav. Zaslav has gone on record stating that the decision to cancel the film was based on a new reset 10-year plan that is going to be enacted for DC. The company now wants to model this after how the MCU was formed. That’s not a terrible idea, but Batgirl was one of the most anticipated DC titles.
DC has been trying to get away from the Zack Snyder-built DC universe, which all but ended when the Snyder Cut of Justice League was released. That film was essentially his exit, and the company could go on to other things. Apart from The Flash, Black Adam, and Shazam! Fury of the Gods, it sounds like everything else is fair game to be canceled. Speaking of Black Adam, that is when Walter Hamada states that he will remain with DC. He was initially angry about the cancelation of Batgirl but agreed to stay on to see Black Adam released in October. We would presume Hamada is going to see how WBD handles everything from here on out. However, should films like Black Canary and Blue Beetle be canceled too, the man might take his exit.
There is no telling what other films will be affected, apart from Batgirl. DC already had a plan in place to bring in some different-looking films, which included the previously mentioned canceled venture. Fans were more than excited about the new direction, which might not happen any longer. The Flash should have been the film to cancel, as Ezra Miller continues to cause issues for his public image. Warner Bros. Discovery needs to make a decision about that film soon.
Batgirl will stay shelved for the time being, but that does not mean some other streamer could come in and purchase the rights. We are not sure that Warner Bros. Discovery would even allow that to happen, but the hope is there. For now, we will all have to patiently wait to see if this new “reset” program is going to cause other DC films to join Batgirl.
