Marvel And DC Star Reveals He Doesn’t Have Normal Relationship With His Son

By Doug Norrie | Updated

Seeing actors on the big or small screen can sometimes confuse us about what that person’s life is like off-screen. But there are times when we get windows into those places, giving a glimpse into a world that might not be all glamour and glitz. Such is the case with actor Barry Keoghan, who opened up about fatherhood and his own issues with a father figure growing up.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, while promoting his upcoming movie Bird, Barry Keoghan spoke about father-son relationships, which are at the forefront of the discussion because of the movie’s plot.

Keoghan said about his own journey as a father, “…my relationship with my son isn’t quite of the normal father-son relationship because I don’t have that figure to draw experience from and to base it on.”

No Father Figure Growing Up

Barry Keoghan mentions he didn’t have a father figure growing up, and it’s been reported in the past that his mother died when he was only 12 years old. He and his brother spent years in foster care before being raised by family members.

His own child, a son named Brando, is two years old, born to him and Alyson Kierans. The couple has since split up.

Barry Keoghan Is A Young Father In Bird

In Bird, Barry Keoghan plays Bug, a single father to daughter Bailey (Nykiya Adams). Keoghan says he drew inspiration for the character from his own life experience, mentioning that there is a brother-sister vibe between the characters.

The latter makes sense, considering the movie is based on a father who had his child at a younger age. Barry Keoghan did say about the experience, “…but for me, the experience of playing a father was — obviously I’m a father, but at that age, she’s 12 in the movie, and it’s like, what do I base it on?”

Barry Keoghan’s Bird was first screened at Cannes in May 2024, and is screening at the Toronto Film Festival as well. For the most part, critics have praised the film, especially the writing and direction from Andrea Arnold who’s been down the Cannes-praise path before with movies like Red Road, Fish Tank, and American Honey.

Saltburn

For his part, Barry Keoghan has become one of the most sought-after and talented actors going right now. He played Oliver Quick in the polarizing Saltburn, which left viewers equal parts mesmerized and disturbed by what went down with that Oxford crew.

While the nature of the film was hotly disputed, no one doubted or questioned the acting chops Barry Keoghan brought to his role in the flick.

Beyond that, Barry Keoghan had a brief part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Druig in Eternals. He also made a quick DC showing as Joker in The Batman, though he’s rumored for an expanded role as the Clown Prince of Crime in The Batman Part II, which is due in 2026.

Barry Keoghan is also set to appear in the Peaky Blinders feature film which picks up after the events of the acclaimed television series. He is also set to star in Johan Renck’s Amo Saddam, currently in production.
