Barry Keoghan Confirms The Return Of The Joker?
The Batman actor Barry Keoghan has been hinting in interviews that he is eager to play the Joker again.
The DC Universe has been a point of pain for fans since the end of the Snyderverse, but Matt Reeves has given the fans something to grasp for the future with The Batman. One of the more unique and vague aspects of the film was the appearance (albeit uncredited appearance) of Barry Keoghan’s Joker. With all of the future projects stemming from Robert Pattinson‘s take on Bruce Wayne, there are ample opportunities for his return; according to The Direct, Barry Keoghan has hinted at his return as the Joker.
In the interview, the Eternals actor was given the opportunity to address the possibility of his return when he revealed that he would love another crack at the role. He even let on that he had done a significant amount of back-development on the character, writing everything down in a moleskin journal. Barry Keoghan also revealed that he was a massive fan of the Joker by saying that he received and was framing a copy of The Killing Joke.
There are plenty of opportunities for the actor to reprise his role. While there is information that the actor was only supposed to be utilized as a tool for character development for Paul Dano’s Riddler, footage of Barry Keoghan as the Joker sparked tons of interest in his return. With Matt Reeves’ Batman universe at least a trilogy, there is ample opportunity to explore the return of his arch-nemesis in the future.
Not only is the film franchise an excellent opportunity for the return of the character, but there are spin-offs that are going on that would benefit from him. The first and most obvious place for him to return will be in the Colin Farrell spin-off, exploring the rise of The Penguin to his mythical status. However, while the two tend to play off of each other well in the comics and movies, the presence of Barry Keoghan as the Joker could easily pull attention away from Colin Ferrell’s Oswald Cobblepot.
The other spin-off wrought with opportunity for his return is the Arkham Assylum-focused series that is in the works over at HBO Max. While the series first began as a Gotham P.D. series focusing on the police department before the appearance of Robert Pattinson in The Batman, Reeves has revealed that the series has been retooled to focus on the Gotham psychiatric facility. If there is one place that Barry Keoghan as the Joker makes perfect sense, it is in his frequent home of Arkham Asylum.
While there isn’t any confirmation about the return of the character, the actor has said that if he had a say in whether or not it happened, he would “definitely, definitely, definitely” make it happen. He even teased that there is a possibility of it happening in Colin Ferrell’s The Penguin when he said that he not only hopes so but that he wouldn’t comment on it further. Regardless of whether or not it was planned to be a long-running character in the franchise, fans are with Barry Keoghan in his desire to return as the Joker.
