Along with Eddie Murphy, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is also bringing back Judge Reinhold as Billy Rosewood and John Ashton as John Taggart. In addition to the returning cast members, we also see Joseph Gordon Levitt join the fray as Axel Foley’s new partner. The rest of the star-studded cast is rounded out by Kevin Bacon, Taylour Paige, Paul Reiser, and Bronson Pinchot.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F sees Detective Axel Foley returning to Beverly Hills after his daughter’s life is threatened. The two team up with Foley’s new partner and his old friends to uncover a conspiracy. It sounds like the perfect set-up for some hilarious and action-packed setpieces.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is a project that has been slowly in development for years, with the film first announced way back in 2014. However, Netflix decided to pick up the film, and it got fast-tracked, leading to the film finally getting put together. Murphy also worked with Netflix to release another sequel to one of his classic movies with Coming 2 America.

Beverly Hills Cop first hit theater screens in 1984 and starred Eddie Murphy as the Detroit police detective Axel Foley, who goes to Beverly Hills to solve the murder of his best friend. The fish-out-of-water Detroit cop in Los Angeles gave the film a lot of its humor, and the action, along with Murphy’s performance, helped to make it a major success. That success led to two sequels.

Beverly Hills Cop II found success as well, but it received mixed reviews compared to the original. Beverly Hills Cop III continued the downward trend for the franchise, as it failed to match the critical and commercial success of the previous entries in the series. The third film came out in 1994, so the series has had plenty of time to move on from the worst-received entry, and fans are undoubtedly excited to see Axel Foley back in action.

It’s not often that we get a sequel to a film nearly 30 years later, so it’s sort of a miracle that Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F got made in the first place. However, the undeniable draw of Eddie Murphy’s comedic talents and the fact that the film is bringing back most of the major cast members means that this film may be able to recreate some of the success of the original. The hype of this film is also great timing for Murphy, who recently had a bit of a miss with his holiday film Candy Cane Lane.

The only downside of Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is that we have a little bit longer to wait. The film is set to come out on Netflix in summer 2024. Stay tuned for news on this and other Netflix films in the meantime.
