Avatar TV Series Happening Next?
James Cameron is betting big on the next Avatar movie, expanding the universe far more by now speaking about an eventual spinoff series in an exclusive interview with ComicBook. According to Cameron, “I think we might get close enough to do television, but it won’t be for, I’d say a minimum of five years, maybe more like 10. But if Avatar becomes a universe, if it becomes a persistent world for people and the desire is there, yeah.”
The issue with James Cameron bringing up this eventual Avatar series is that the characters and the worlds they have created have everything to do with computer graphics. Some of those graphics might be a bit too advanced on the grander scale of the movie screen to even be shown on the small screen. That or it might be entirely too expensive to bring that level of technology to a medium that will not bring in money that equates to a few billion dollars.
As it stands, we reported that Avatar 2 was sitting at a budget of $350 to $400 million, which would make it one of the most expensive movies ever made. The new Avatar sequel will have to make it to the fourth highest-grossing movie ever just to break even, and for the film sequels to continue to be made. Cameron also stated in the interview that “IF” the sequel helps build a franchise, then an Avatar series could be explored in around 10 years time.
An Avatar series does not sound like it’s out of the realm of possibility, especially because of how prominent Disney+ has become in the last few years. We could see a spinoff show taking place there after a few more sequels are released, which Cameron already has plans for. Apparently, he has begun working on the sixth and seventh movies, meaning that a much grander universe is already being planned along with these movies.
We certainly admire that James Cameron believes in this franchise, but we wonder if 13 years is too long for people to have to wait to see the next Avatar movie in this planned movie series. Granted, early reviews are already talking about Avatar 2, in how it is a visual masterpiece. That is great, but that does not necessarily mean that it will translate to ticket sales, though we shall all see soon.
Avatar 2 is set to be released in theaters on December 16, and the good thing for James Cameron is that the movie is being released right in the middle of the holidays. Most children have a two-week break off from school, and families are flying in and traveling from all over to be with their loved ones. Christmas is one of the busiest times of the year for movies, so this next Avatar movie in the planned sequel series might just do well enough at the box office to warrant the expanded universe.
James Cameron is planning the movies to eventually make it to Earth, so it would be interesting if a spinoff Avatar series would be able to detail more about how people on our planet are reacting to the news of this alien race existing on these beautiful worlds.
