James Cameron‘s Avatar was the biggest movie of all time when it launched in 2009. According to Variety, Avatar 4 is far enough along to report they passed a significant milestone. At the Busan International Film Festival, producer John Landau addressed the crowd after screening a 15-minute clip of Avatar 2: The Way of Water, where he revealed they had completed a third of Avatar 4.
Landau reported that there were logistical reasons that they needed to complete that much of the film. He also revealed that the team had designed much of Avatar 4 and was making giant leaps forward in the production, ensuring that the fans wouldn’t have to wait thirteen years to see what happens to the cast of the Avatar world.
The first movie was meant to be the beginning of a large franchise starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, and Stephen Lang, but fans of the film had to wait for over a decade before the second installment, set to be delivered this December. The rest of the series is set for release in 2024 and 2026 and is already in production to avoid another long break between them.
2009’s Avatar follows Jake (Sam Worthington) after he becomes paralyzed in battle and is taken to an alien planet, Pandora, to take the place of his twin brother in the scientific exploration of the culture. Jake finds himself on a team with Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver) as they integrate themselves into the Pandoran civilization.
While with the inhabitants of the planet, Jake meets Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), who changes his way of thinking and shows him the horrific things his people were doing to her tribe and land, causing him to join them and rise up against the humans. The story of Jake and Neytiri is continued in Avatar 2, 3, and 4.
Sam Worthington saw his career explode with his three massive blockbusters in 2009 and 2010 with Terminator: Salvation, Avatar, and Clash of the Titans. Worthington seemed to be everywhere with eight projects over the next two years and suffered from over-exposure, never really capturing the same level of success as he did with his first initial launch to stardom. Even though he deserved recognition for his role in Manhunt: Unabomber, he is looking for a career resurgence with the relaunch of his most popular project, Avatar 1-4.
Zoe Saldana found the opposite career trajectory after 2009, as she starred in the first movie of two big franchises, Avatar and Star Trek. Her career ballooned after the success of both of the films, and she starred in films like The Losers and Columbiana, but she became a household name when she landed the role of Gamora in the Marvel Cinematic Universe team of cast offs, Guardians of the Galaxy.
With Avatar 4 a third of the way to completion and the rest of it designed, it seems that fans will see the next three installments of the series on time. Since the first film broke every record in the books, creator James Cameron has three chances to break all of his own records and get Avatar back on top.
