Avatar 3 Is No Longer Making Its Release Date
Avatar 3's release date has been pushed back an entire year, from December 2024 to December 2025.
When James Cameron set out to tell the next story from his colorfully imaginative world of Pandora in Avatar: The Way of Water, Disney almost immediately gave the famed director the green light to bring audiences a third, fourth, and even fifth installment in the franchise. With box office numbers soaring following the sequel’s initial release, it was a no-brainer for the folks at the top to have Cameron push forward with his next three bits of vision. While the initial date for audiences to return to Pandora via Avatar 3 was in December 2024, an upheaval at the studio is now giving the film a pushback until December 2025.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Avatar 3 isn’t the only title finding itself on the back burner as Disney revealed that their entire release schedule would be affected by some changes. Avatar 4 won’t make its big screen debut until 2029, with the fifth installment expected to land in 2031 – which, quite frankly, looks crazy when it’s laid out like that.
Softening the blow for Avatar fans who will not only need to wait an extra year for Avatar 3 but also much longer for the fourth and fifth films, Disney did give some hope of what was to come from the future of the Star Wars franchise by announcing that two new movies are on their way for 2026. Another bit of excitement was in the reveal that Marvel fans can expect to see Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman throw punches a few months earlier, with Deadpool 3 being bumped from its November 2024 opening to May 3, 2024.
Unfortunately, the good news surrounding Deadpool 3 is the end of the line for Marvel fans who, after eagerly awaiting more information on Jonathan Majors’ villain Kang the Conqueror, were bummed to find out that Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is being pushed back a full year to May 1, 2026. Because of this, the next Avengers film, Secret Wars, will also be held for an extra year, now slated to hit theaters on May 7, 2027. Essentially, if you were looking forward to seeing Avatar 3 or any of the upcoming Avenger movies, today’s news will be a tough pill to swallow.
All things Avatar 3, 4, and 5 and Marvel aside, Disney also broke the bad news with the announcement that the live-action Moana will be coming to a screen near you on June 27, 2025. With the studio’s live-action version of The Little Mermaid currently swimming laps around the competition at the worldwide box office, it’s a sure thing that Disney is pushing Moana to the top of its project list.
As for Avatar 3, while not much is known about what audiences can expect from the third film and beyond, there’s no doubt that the man known for bringing us masterful hits including Titanic and The Terminator is going to raise the bar on what’s possible. We can also almost count on the familiar names of Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Jack Champion, Britain Dalton, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and more to be spotted on the call sheet.
