Avatar 2 Finally Reveals When You Can Watch It At Home
Avatar 2 arrives on March 28 for home viewing on streaming services, including three hours of bonus features.
James Cameron’s latest box office-topping film has finally set a release date for digital streaming. The sci-fi epic Avatar: The Way of Water will be available for digital purchase as early as March 28 via Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, Vudu, and other film-hosting streamers. According to a source at Variety, digital copies of the film will be available for purchase in stunning 4K Ultra HD with Dolby Atmos audio, allowing you to capture the VFX marvel in your home at the highest possible quality.
Cameron’s masterpiece famously took over a decade to produce, with more than three years of filming before visual effects teams spent thousands of hours perfecting the latest technology to create the film’s stunning landscapes. Of course, according to the box office numbers, that work was well worth it, as Avatar: The Way of Water has continued to climb the charts, raking in over $2.2 billion, making it the third highest-grossing film of all time. The only films to top Cameron’s latest outing are 2019’s Avengers: Endgame and the original 2009 Avatar film, which currently holds the title of number one, at nearly $3 billion earned.
Original box office estimates were highly conservative, with the film projected to underperform significantly, causing James Cameron to question the franchise’s future, despite promising earlier to make five movies. Obviously, with the enormous success of The Way of Water, the following films have already gotten underway, with production schedules vastly outpacing the absurd length of the second installment. As it stands, Avatar 3 is scheduled for a December 2024 release, with the fourth film expected to arrive in theaters by December 2026.
Despite recent reports that Disney may be slashing budgets for Marvel and Star Wars films and Disney+ originals, James Cameron’s enormous Avatar investments are safe. The digital release of The Way of Water is set to come with more than three hours of bonus content, including behind-the-scenes looks at the technological feats of the production and deep dives into the culture and lore of the Na’vi people. The film has also earned a laundry list of accolades, including Academy Award nominations for best picture, production design, sound, and visual effects.
Digital features may vary based on the purchasing platform, so be sure to research which streamer is right for you before making your purchase. Regardless, as one of the highest-grossing films of all time at the box office, Avatar: The Way of Water can expect to earn millions more on home release. The release is set to remain digital only for the foreseeable future, with no announcements regarding Blu-ray or DVD availability currently scheduled.
As for the franchise’s future, James Cameron is already hard at work crafting Avatar 3 and 4, with behind-the-scenes news following the production at every turn. Early reports indicate the third film may focus on a tribe of volatile fire Na’vi, who live in the volcanic rocky regions of Pandora, in stark contrast to Avatar 2‘s water tribe.
