James Cameron holds the honor of having the highest-grossing film of all time. That was, of course, the first Avatar film. The 2009 mega-blockbuster bulldozed its way to the top of the box office charts in a massive way. Since then, the promised sequel has slowly but surely come into frame. Little by little, news of this new film has made its way to news outlets and fans. Disney surprised everyone by adding the teaser for Avatar 2 to the previews before Doctor Strange 2. However, after the weekend had passed, the teaser trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water officially dropped online, and it takes in a staggering 148.6 million views in just 24 hour’s time. Now it appears as if Mr. Cameron might find his way to having another huge blockbuster hit.
This massive number of trailer views for Avatar 2 places the trailer higher than any Star Wars movie that has preceded it, including the newest Star Wars: The Last Jedi trailer. The only film that has more trailer views within a 24-hour period is F9, which racked up the highest with 202.7 million views. China had reportedly logged in some 23 million views for the Avatar trailer alone. The surprise trailer offered up a more somber tone and look at Jake Sully and Neytiri, as they must fight to keep their family safe. As the title of the new film dictates, there are tons of shots of bodies of water, meaning that the Na’vi could recruit some help from those who call the ocean their home. You can see the trailer below:
Much like its predecessor, Avatar 2 looks stunning. The amount of color and visual effects in the trailer alone are a clear reason why the trailer has logged so many views in just a short period. It could also be because so many people were waiting to see what the next James Cameron epic was going to look like. Avatar is the highest-grossing film of all time, and it has been over a decade since the last film came out. Cameron had promised a more expansive world, and that seems to now be coming to fruition. The rumors are that an Avatar film will come out every two years from here on out. Well, the plan is for two more sequels to come out in 2024 and 2026. This is certainly turning into the franchise it was always meant to be.
Avatar 2 has now crushed the box office numbers that were once dominated by Star Wars and now gets to hold the honor of crushing the online trailer numbers as well. The film did not catch the massive 200 million that F9 was able to achieve in trailer views, but it should still have no issues with being a monster movie at the box office. Avatar: The Way of Water will debut in theaters in December. A new version of the original Avatar film with restored picture and sound will be in theaters on September 23rd. Looks like Cameron wants to secure his film never being beaten at the box office.
