Aubrey Plaza’s Brand New MCU Character Revealed
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has only gotten more popular over time, and that has lured more and more major Hollywood actors over to the dork side. Recently, we learned that America’s girl next door, Aubrey Plaza, would be joining the MCU, but it wasn’t clear which character she would be playing. However, X (formerly Twitter) user @CanWeGetToast known for reliable Marvel scoops, recently spilled the tea: Plaza will be playing the original character Rio Vidal in Agatha: Coven of Chaos, where she’ll play the first Green Witch, who happens to be a former lover of Agatha.
Reportedly, Aubrey Plaza will be playing Rio Vidal, an original MCU character in Agatha: Coven of Chaos, that’s the first Green Witch and Agatha’s former lover.
If you don’t remember Agatha: Coven of Chaos getting announced, you might have to snag the Eye of Agamotto from Doctor Strange and turn time back a couple of years. This Disney+ series was first announced back in 2021, but it has seemingly picked up speed (especially with the reveal of major cast members like Aubrey Plaza) as we get closer to the series’ intended release sometime in 2024.
Despite the House of Mouse currently facing one delay after another due to the writers and actors striking, executives still seem confident that we’ll see this series make its magical premiere sometime next year.
We don’t know many details about Agatha: Coven of Chaos, including the plot, but it looks like the show will be a spiritual sequel to the successful WandaVision series. Not only will Kathryn Hahn be reprising her role as Agatha, but we will see the return of several characters first introduced as residents of Westview.
We don’t know much about Agatha: Coven of Chaos at this point, and jsut as Kathryn Hahn’s character was really someone else, Aubrey Plaza’s final role might be completely different.
We mostly saw them through the reality-warping lens of the Scarlet Witch last time around, so it’s a pretty safe bet the series is going to catch us up on what life has been like for these characters after their return to the real world.
Sadly, we know even less about Aubrey Plaza’s original character other than the fact that she’s a former lover of Agatha and the first Green Witch.
While neither the name nor the title refers to known characters, some fans have speculated that the show will play with some of the elements first introduced in the 2015 Scarlet Witch comic series. That comic presented the idea that color-coded magic users could effectively pass their powers to others, which means there’s a chance that Aubrey Plaza’s Green Witch has some connection to the villain Dian, better known as the Emerald Warlock.
Aubrey Plaza’s character might have a connection to the 2015 Scarlet Witch solo series, but what we really want is a Chris Pratt cameo to bring Parks and Recreation’s best couple together one more time.
We won’t know the answers until Agatha: Coven of Chaos drops sometime in 2024 or (and this is more likely) the info gets leaked online early by some enterprising scoopers. Until then, we can only speculate what Aubrey Plaza’s character will be like, but considering how effortlessly she elevated all of her scenes in the Marvel show Legion, we’re getting pretty hyped.
If only the new show could somehow have a Star-Lord cameo, then Disney would finally be able to provide us with a Parks and Recreation reunion episode, but that has about as much chance of happening as this upcoming show has of not facing further delays.
