Beautiful and talented, Aubrey Plaza has built up quite an impressive film resume for herself over the last few years. Known more for her television work, the actress is beginning to receive more and more recognition for her big screen appearances. In fact, Plaza is getting a tremendous amount of buzz for her performance in this year’s Emily the Criminal. What’s more? The actress looks set to star in Adam Driver’s new movie. Deadline reports, “Aubrey Plaza has found that next big feature film.”
Megapolis looks to be the next major motion picture gig for Aubrey Plaza. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, the upcoming drama will follow an architect who wants to rebuild New York City as a utopia following a devastating disaster. In addition to Aubrey Plaza and Adam Driver, the movie will star Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Forrest Whitaker, and Laurence Fishburne.
Development on Megapolis goes all the way back to the 1980s, and Coppola has remained committed to the project for all these years. In fact, in addition to writing and directing, Coppola will also be self-financing the flick, which he has said is a passion project of his. Considered one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, Coppola is responsible for arguably two of the best movies ever made, The Godfather and Apocalypse Now. Landing a role in the Academy Award-winning director’s latest flick is undoubtedly exciting for Aubrey Plaza.
Recently, Aubrey Plaza has been getting rave reviews for her turn in Emily the Criminal. In the film, the actress portrays Emily, who is buried in student debt and unable to get a job due to a minor criminal record. To make ends meet, she becomes a dummy shopper and buys goods with stolen credit cards supplied by Youcef (Theo Rossi). After being turned down for every job she applies for, she and Youcef devise a plan to take their shady business to the next level.
As of now, Emily the Criminal has garnered a 94% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 80% fresh rating from audiences. Released in theaters earlier this month, the thriller opened with nearly $670,000 from a very limited number of screens. So far, the movie has grossed $1.4 million. Starring alongside Aubrey Plaza is Theo Rossi, Bernardo Badillo, Gina Gershon, Wesley Han, and Kim Yarbrough. The feature was written and directed by John Patton Ford.
Known for her comedic roles, it’s refreshing to see Aubrey Plaza showing off her more serious side. Having spent years portraying the character of April Ludgate on NBC’s Parks and Recreation, it likely wasn’t easy for the actress to convince folks in the industry that she could dial down the funny for a more sedate tone. Fortunately, it looks like the comedian has gotten the last laugh (pun intended) if the rave reviews for her role in Emily the Criminal are any indication. We’re incredibly excited to see what the actress can do under Francis Ford Coppola’s wing. Megapolis is currently in pre-production, thus no release date has been set at this time. In the meantime, you can catch Aubrey Plaza (her voice anyway) on the animated series Little Demon on FX.
