Ashton Kutcher Reveals The Reason He Returned For That ’90s Show
Ashton Kutcher revealed that Mila Kunis forced him to be in the That '90s Show sequel series.
Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis both starred in That ’70s Show as Michael Kelso and Jackie Burkhart, a fact that Kunis has not let Kutcher forget. When they were approached about appearing in the That ’90s Show spinoff Kunis was more forceful about getting Kutcher to sign on. According to Kutcher, “[She] goes, ‘You know, we owe our entire careers to this show…It doesn’t matter what the script is, we’re doing it.'”
Thankfully, Mila Kunis was the voice of reason for Ashton Kutcher, as the pair did show up in the new series. They were joined by Tommy Chong (Leo), Don Stark (Bob Pinciotti), Laura Prepon (Donna Forman), Topher Grace (Eric Forman), and Wilmer Valderrama (Fez). Though their cameo was short and sweet, it just added to the pure nostalgia that the new sitcom was attempting to accomplish.
Both Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis had their careers started by appearing in That ’70s Show, and as a result, have seen plenty of success because of the hit sitcom. Though they had moved far past their humble beginnings, everyone will always remember them as Jackie and Kelso. Some of the best moments in the original series were of the pair fighting with one another.
Oddly enough, although Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis are married in real-life, Kunis had a huge problem with her being married to Kelso in the new sequel series. Kunis stated that her character would have likely ended up with Fez and that Michael Kelso had Brooke, portrayed by Shannon Elizabeth, at the conclusion of the original series. Still, it is kind of great that the characters and the actors who played them ended up together.
That ’90s Show follows a similar formula as Leia Forman, Eric and Donna’s daughter convinces them to let her stay with Red and Kitty for the summer. Leia makes friends with the new neighborhood kids and even falls in love with one of them. That person is Jay Kelso, Michael (Ashton Kutcher), and Jackie’s son.
This is how we get to see Ashton Kutcher and Kunis make their glorious return to the series, as Red finds out that Jay is hanging out with Leia, and once he hears Jay’s last name, Red forbids them from interacting. It was quite fantastic to see Kelso and Jackie back as their usual selves, but we would have loved to see them appear more. Based on Kunis saying “what the script is” we imagine that Kutcher was likely a bit more apprehensive considering they both had such small parts.
One of the drawbacks of the new series is that there was not enough time to establish all the new kids in the crew, and the cameos were a bit messy. You can read our review of That ’90s Show here. Still, seeing Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, and more of the classic gang was something that filled us all full of joy.
Everyone can watch That ’90s Show on Netflix right now, as all 10 episodes of the series are currently streaming. For fans of That ’70s Show, you will certainly be thrilled when Ashton Kutcher’s Kelso comes walking into the frame.
