According to a new rumor, one of the biggest and best films from Arnold Schwarzenegger might finally be getting a sequel.

Before James Cameron was making some of the biggest films of all-time, with movies like Titanic and Avatar, the director simply made great action films like Aliens, The Abyss, and Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Cameron’s last film before making Titanic was 1994’s True Lies, a fantastic action-comedy starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis. There have been rumors for decades now that Cameron might make a sequel to this underrated gem, but now a new rumor suggests that a sequel is already in development.
This latest True Lies rumor comes from Daniel Richtman, who posted this piece of gossip on his Patreon page. Richtman’s rumor simply says that a True Lies sequel is currently in the works, and isn’t tied into the television project that is also on the way., so don’t expect Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis on the television series. Earlier this year, a True Lies television series reboot received a pilot order from CBS. This new show is from Terminator: Salvation director McG, Burn Notice creator Matt Nix, and James Cameron. McG is also bringing a Turner & Hooch series to Disney+ in the near future as well.
At this point, turning True Lies into a CBS series makes far more sense than a True Lies sequel. Recently, CBS has shown interest in adapting older films and TV shows into new programs. The network just premiered The Equalizer starring Queen Latifah, while Clarice tells the story of The Silence of the Lambs’ lead character. But it doesn’t make as much sense for Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis to come back to this action franchise almost thirty years later.
James Cameron originally planned to direct True Lies 2 soon after Titanic, with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jamie Lee Curtis and others reprising their roles. However, after the attacks of 9/11, Cameron said that it would be hard to portray that same type of humor in a sequel. Cameron also said in 2009 that he had no plans for a sequel, while in 2019, Curtis reiterated that there would likely never be True Lies after 9/11.
But it also doesn’t seem like any of those who would be involved in a True Lies 2 really have the time to make a sequel. James Cameron seems like he will be making his Avatar sequels until the end of time, although he did say in the past he wasn’t even sure if he would be directing a True Lies sequel. Arnold Schwarzenegger is still recovering from his heart surgery a few months ago, with no upcoming projects in the works, let alone an intensive action film. Meanwhile, Jamie Lee Curtis has two new Halloween sequels coming out in the next two years, in addition to Everything Everywhere All at Once from the directors of Swiss Army Man, and the Borderlands film.
In reality, it doesn’t seem like we are any closer to an actual True Lies sequel with James Cameron, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Jamie Lee Curtis involved, and it seems unlikely that we will ever get one. However, at least this new television series looks like it will continue the series in some form on CBS.
