They say two’s a crowd and three’s a party, and this saying has never rung truer than with the recent news reported on the highly anticipated Twins revival. Nearly three decades later, the beloved film is finally ramping up plans for a sequel to the blockbuster comedy starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito. Sitting down for an interview with Forbes, DeVito recently discussed the upcoming project and plans to bring the blunt comedian, Tracy Morgan, into the fold.
In the interview with Forbes, Danny DeVito confirmed that the Twins sequel, being touted with the title, Triplets, is currently in the works and would see him and Arnold Schwarzenegger once again pair up as the unlikely fraternal twin brothers with the renowned Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters) once again helming the film. To incorporate the new brother into the sequel, Triplets is set to reveal that a third Black baby was secretly born into the family as the long-lost triplet reunites with his brothers.
DeVito admitted to keeping in touch with both Ivan and Arnold over the years, stating that the film has been in the works for quite a while. It was nearly ten years ago that news on the sequel first broke. In 2012 The Hollywood Reporter reported that Universal Studios was in the works to create the Twins sequel that would not only see the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito but would also welcome comedian Eddie Murphy to the film. Now almost a decade later, it seems that Universal will finally be producing the film, but will replace Murphy with Morgan, according to DeVito and initial reports from the studio.
Although Twins received mixed reviews and currently sits at a 43% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film’s massive success at the box office and continued support and nostalgia from fans of the film have warranted a sequel for years. This past September, Universal officially confirmed that Arnold Schwarzenegger and crew would start filming at the beginning of 2022 with Tracy Morgan set to replace Murphy as a third unlikely brother. It was reported that Eddie Murphy was forced to give up his role in the film due to his obligations to work on the upcoming Beverly Hills Cop project slated for Netflix. Likewise, reports suggest that the script was tweaked to better fit Tracy Morgan’s comedic style.
Tracy Morgan, best known for his work on Saturday Night Live, 30 Rock, and Coming to America, is largely famous for his unpredictable antics. His portrayals of characters such as Brian Fellows on SNL, and the iconic Tracy Jordan from 30 Rock— which the comedian admitted was a heightened version of himself– have earned Morgan a rank amongst the largest comedians in show biz.
As it’s been rumored that Danny Devito and Arnold Schwarzenegger may have handpicked Morgan as Murphy’s replacement themselves, DeVito spoke highly of Morgan during his Forbes interview, saying, “We’re going to have some fun and we have Tracy Morgan also in it and I’m so excited about that.” While Twins 2 is set to begin filming shortly, the movie has no release date yet, but we are excited to see how well Morgan will mesh with the fairly odd duo and are hopeful the iconic duo will turn into an iconic threesome.
