The 1990 comedy classic was directed by Ivan Reitman and featured Arnold Schwarzenegger as undercover cop Richard Kimball who poses as a kindergarten teacher in order to catch a criminal. The movie also starred Richard Tyson as Arnold’s foil, drug dealer Crisp and NCIS: Los Angeles actress Linda Hunt as the principal that frequently butts heads with Kimball.
Kindergarten Cop was part of several comedic films The Terminator actor made in the late ’80s and ’90s to prove his range as an actor. Known as an action star, thanks to movies like Commando and Predator, Arnold Schwarzenegger pivoted to comedy starting with 1988’s Twins. It wasn’t until two years later that Kindergarten Cop turned the former bodybuilder into a legitimate laugh riot.
The True Lies star wouldn’t agree to make Kindergarten Cop unless a couple of conditions were met. First of all, Arnold Schwarzenegger would only agree to make the movie if Ivan Reitman agreed to direct. Arnold’s other caveat was that the movie had to have some kind of physical fitness theme. Not surprising since that was the year President Bush appointed Schwarzenegger the Chairman of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.
Arnold’s insistence on a combination of the Ghostbusters director and pushups turned out to be the right call. Kindergarten Cop was a box office hit when it came out and cemented Arnold Schwarzenegger as a bonafide comedy star. The movie was the 10th highest-grossing film in 1990, narrowly beating out Back to the Future Part III for a spot in the top 10.
The former Conan, the Barbarian, was almost defeated by his pint-sized costars. Arnold Schwarzenegger stated that the kids on set had him “sweating.” Eventually, Arnold came to adore the kids and even considers Kindergarten Cop his favorite film partially because of them.
Kindergarten Cop has a rich pop culture legacy. “Who is your daddy, and what does he do,” and “It’s not a tumor!” have entered the pop culture lexicon. The two phrases are most people’s go-to when impersonating Arnold Schwarzenegger. In addition to that, the film’s school inspired a similar school location in Silent Hill.
The movie spawned a sequel 26 years later titled Kindergarten Cop 2, starring Dolph Lundgren in place of Arnold Schwarzenegger. The sequel has a 29 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and was nowhere near as successful as the original. A cameo from Arnold might have helped the maligned sequel, but the Governator’s busy schedule wouldn’t allow for it.
