Anthony Mackie is returning as Sam Wilson in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but many fans have been wondering if he would be taking on the mantle of Captain America. At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Sam was given Cap’s shield by Steve Rogers and looked to be the successor to the role. However, the title of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has had everyone thinking that Sam Wilson would not be donning his version of the Captain America costume. Well, a new leak has quashed that as we now have a good look at Falcon’s version of the Captain America outfit.
Twitter account Marvel News managed to get a picture of Anthony Mackie’s toy from the upcoming The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and it reveals Sam Wilson’s new Captain America look. Check it out right here:
Not only does the toy itself show off Anthony Mackie’s Captain America getup, but the promotional photo on the box actually gives us our greatest look at Sam Wilson. And if there was any doubt that he would be going by the name Captain America, you can see the toy is being labeled as such on the right side of the packaging. This seems like undeniable proof that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will be building up to Sam Wilson becoming Captain America. If there was ever any doubt that Sam was going to accept the mantle of Captain America, this puts a nail in that coffin.
It seems pretty clear that the Anthony Mackie version of Captain America is taking very direct inspiration from the comic books. In the comic book canon, Sam Wilson did take over as Captain America for a while. However, he did maintain his Falcon look in the comics as well. For comparison, here is what Sam Wilson looked like in the comic book canon when he decided to take on the identity of Captain America:
If we were betting any money, we would put our wager on Anthony Mackie showing up in this Captain America/Falcon costume in the very last episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Our guess is that a lot of the series will deal with Sam’s feelings about taking over the Captain America role from Steve Rogers and he will finally accept that role in the season finale. It would be a triumphant way to leave the show and set up Sam’s Captain America for any other future appearances in other Marvel Cinematic Universe projects.
With this out there, we are anxiously awaiting our first in-camera look at Anthony Mackie in this Captain America outfit. The toy and promotional artwork look awesome and we bet the live-action version of the costume is going to look even better. We will find out once The Falcon and the Winter Soldier finally drops on Disney+ this March. It is certain that Sam Wilson becoming Captain America is going to cause plenty of conversation. We can’t wait to hear it all.
