Some movies start with such promise, only to let you down at the end. That’s exactly how I felt about The Intern starring Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro when I watched it for the first time. Though the movie sounded great, and had a good start, the ending ruined the entire movie and left me with a sour taste in my mouth.

Started Strong

I am a huge fan of Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro, so when I saw that the two were in a movie together, I was eager to watch it. The Intern came out in 2015, but I hadn’t heard about it until 2024 and wasn’t sure how I missed this movie.

However, after giving it a watch, I can see why it wasn’t given as much hype as I expected it to have. Initially, the movie started funny and was quite touching.

The Story

The Intern is a story about a 70-year-old widower, Ben Whittaker, played by Robert De Niro. He has found that retirement is much more boring than he expected, and strives to find something to do. One day, he comes across an ad looking to hire senior citizens for an internship position.

The business is owned by Jules Ostin, played by Anne Hathaway who runs an online clothing store. When she hires Ben, she initially doesn’t give him much to do, thinking he won’t be able to keep up. However, he proves that he has the experience, drive, and willingness to learn that makes him a valuable asset to the tea.

Not only does he end up helping Jules learn and grow, but many other team members as well. The movie was charming and witty until the end.

The Ending

Throughout the beginning of The Intern, Anne Hathaway’s character reveals herself to be an amazing boss who’s handling her company well, though it needs a bit of organization. However, it turns into everyone pushing her out of her role as boss, including her husband.

In the end, the husband ends up cheating on her, claiming it’s because she’s always busy, and he needs some attention. She is sad for a while and then decides to forgive him, make someone else CEO of the company, and try to mend the relationship.

A Punch To The Gut

While I get The Intern was trying to show the importance of family and how Anne Hathaway’s character needed to find a balance between family and work. But it felt heavily unbalanced. Not only was she cheated on and guilted into forgiving her husband, but she gave up the job she was passionate about, and had to make most of the effort to mend the relationship.

It felt like a punch to the gut. We went from this movie about a skilled woman as a boss who has a plan and cares about her job to a glorified housewife who’s always going to wonder if her husband is cheating again. The ending seemed to take away from the story entirely.

GFR SCORE

I gave Anne Hathaway’s The Intern a 1/5 because of the ending. It ruined the movie for me. However, the majority of audience members enjoyed the movie. With over 270,000 reviews, The Intern has an average score of 7.1 out of 10 on IMDb.

So while this movie may not have been for me, that doesn’t mean it’s bad. It’s worth giving the movie a shot if you haven’t seen it yet. If you want to watch The Intern with Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro, it’s available to stream on Max.
