Anne Hathaway Reveals Gross Hollywood Kissing Test

Anne Hathaway, now 41, described how these uncomfortable auditions were quite common in the 2000s. She dived deep into the matter by revealing that she was told, “We have 10 guys coming today and you’re cast. Aren’t you excited to make out with all of them?'” Hathaway admitted feeling confused and even a little disgusted by the request, stating, “And I thought, ‘Is there something wrong with me?’ because I wasn’t excited. I thought it sounded gross.”

Anne Hathaway continued to say that she was young and had just started in Hollywood. She was aware of the position she was in and the potential consequences if she were labeled too difficult to work with. She came forward to confess that this kind of fear outweighed her discomfort at the time. The actress went along with the kissing tests, pretending she was excited. She claims, “It wasn’t a power play; no one was trying to be awful or hurt me. It was just a very different time, and now we know better.”

This isn’t the first that Anne Hathaway was candid about the harsh realities of Hollywood. In November 2023, she spoke to PORTER magazine, revealing that she was once told her career would plummet after turning 35. The Devil Wears Prada star said she was well informed that many women face ageism in Hollywood. 

Nevertheless, Anne Hathaway has proved everyone wrong, as her career has continued to thrive past what she was told was an expiration date. Over 20 years ago, she started her career as Mia Thermopolis in The Princess Diaries, followed by Ella Enchanted, and then a turn as Jake Gyllenhaal’s wife in the award-winning Brokeback Mountain.

However, she is best known for her roles as put-upon assistant Andy Sachs in The Devil Wears Prada or as Kym in the indie hit Rachel Getting Married. Then, she joined the list of actresses who have played Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises. She also has a number of upcoming projects, including the film Flowervale Street.

As an established Hollywood A-lister, Anne Hathaway has come a long way from the kissing booths in her early career. With a strong career behind her, she has become one of many voices for women’s rights, and she takes center stage once again as she is on tour promoting her new film The Idea of You, which touches on some of feminism’s burning questions. She is a producer and main star of the rom-com that tells the story of an unlikely romance between a 40-year-old single mom, played by Hathaway, and 24-year-old Hayes Campbell, lead singer of boy band sensation August Moon, portrayed by Nicholas Galitzine. 

The Idea of You features Hathaway and Galitzine, as well as Ella Rubin, Annie Mumolo, and Reid Scott. The film has already garnered positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes review aggregator with 95 percent. The Idea of You will come to Prime Video on May 2.
