Sci-Fi Anime Finally Returning For Season 2 After Shutting Down Production
The long-awaited second season of Nier: Automata Ver 1.1a is coming back in July, and there’s a trailer to prove it. The trailer gives us a great look at protagonists 2B and 9S in action set to a new banger theme song by singer LiSA, who anime fans will recognize from her opening for the first season of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. In short, it seems like the second season is going to be worth the long wait.
Nier: Automata Ver 1.1a first aired in January of last year and then faced COVID-related delays for a month before the fourth episode could air. Finally, they were able to wrap up the first season in July, but it was a weird watching schedule for those who were trying to watch it as it was airing. It seems like the second season will have a much more straightforward release schedule.
Nier: Automata Ver 1.1a is produced by A-1 Pictures and is based on the 2017 game Nier: Automata, which was developed by PlatinumGames and published by Square Enix. The critically acclaimed title was directed and co-written by Yoko Taro, who also co-wrote the anime series alongside Ryouji Masuyama. The original Japanese and English cast from the games also reprised their roles for the anime.

Nier: Automata Ver 1.1a takes place on Earth in the distant future, where our planet is locked in a proxy war with aliens. The invading aliens battle using Machine Lifeforms while Androids fight for humanity. The series follows elite android YoRHa models 2B and 9S as they’re sent to Earth on a recon mission.
The first season of Nier: Automata Ver 1.1a was great, and fans have been patiently waiting for the second season. Fortunately, the season seems on track for its July release date. If you’re a fan of the game, you owe it to yourself to check out the first season if you haven’t already, and fans of the series should check out the game.

It’s an especially great time to give the game a try, as Yoko Taro might be working on another Nier game at the moment. Producer Yosuke Saito said that he, Taro, and composer Keiichi Okabe are working on a new project. While Saito said he couldn’t say much about the project, he did tease, “It might be Nier, it might not be Nier.”

Of course, that leaves it extremely open that the project won’t be Nier after all, but he did add the caveat that there will always be new Nier games as long as Yoko Taro is alive. So, even if something isn’t immediately on the way, fans of the franchise can rest assured that another project will happen eventually.
