Angelina Jolie And Halle Berry To Play Competing Super-Spies
Angelina Jolie and Halle Berry will star in Maude v Maude.
There was a bidding war among Hollywood studios lately, with each one wanting to earn the rights to an upcoming action thriller featuring X-Men actress Halle Berry and Those Who Wish Me Dead star Angelina Jolie. Deadline reports that Warner Bros. landed the rights to the film, Maude v Maude, a so-called “Bond vs. Bourne”-style movie that will apparently bring the two big-name superstars across the globe as they (probably) each battle against their similarly-named counterparts.
Warner Bros.’s choice to purchase the rights to this star-centric action thriller comes at a time when the company has had a string of misses. This year, it has released the movies House Party, Magic Mike’s Last Dance, and Shazam! Fury of the Gods — none of which have fared well with critics nor attracted large audiences. It seems likely that the company hopes a film starring both Halle Berry and Angelina Jolie will help bring butts into seats — something they’ll desperately need if this trend of unremarkable releases continues.
Maude v Maude will be the first time that Halle Berry and Angeline Jolie have appeared in a movie together, despite the fact that they’ve both been working in the industry for more than 30 years. Jolie’s first film was the 1992 Jon Voight comedy Looking to Get Out, playing a small part that soon led to bigger roles in films like Hackers and Foxfire. Berry appeared in several TV series before landing her first film role in 1991’s Jungle Fever, and she appeared in the Bruce Willis film The Last Boy Scout that same year.
Maude v Maude would not be the first time Angelina Jolie has been in an action film pitting her against someone with the same name. In the 2005 film Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Jolie played Jane Smith, a superspy who found herself fighting against (and later alongside) her husband, Brad Pitt‘s John Smith. The film wasn’t spectacular, but it managed to remain consistently entertaining throughout its two-hour runtime, showing off both its stars’ action chops.
It’s not just Mr. and Mrs. Smith that makes Angeline Jolie a prime candidate for starring alongside Halle Berry in Maude v Maude. Her career has been full of high-octane action films. This includes the two Tomb Raider films, the 2000 heist film Gone in 60 Seconds, the very strange Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, and the action thriller Salt.
Like Angeline Jolie, Halle Berry is also no stranger to action films, as she starred in the 2002 James Bond film Die Another Day — a film that marked Pierce Brosnan’s final outing as the world’s most famous superspy. More recently, she appeared in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum as Sofia Al-Azwar, the manager of the Casablanca branch of the criminal-friendly Continental Hotel. She also had a minor role in the comedic spy film Kingsman: The Golden Circle.
There’s currently no estimated release date for Maude v Maude, but we do know that it’s set to be directed by Roseanne Liang, who is best known for directing Creamerie and Shadow in the Cloud.
