Andy Serkis Is Returning To Star Wars And We Can’t Wait
Andy Serkis is returning in Andor Season 2 as Kino Loy.
Andy Serkis has dropped a major hint about the fate of his Andor character, Kino Loy, according to The Direct. After first appearing in the Disney+ original series’ eighth episode, the Batman star went on to become a fan favorite in all three of his Andor appearances. Though many fans assumed that Kino Loy had died off-screen due to his inability to swim to shore in episode 10, Lucasfilm has shared an announcement that the character will return in Andor’s upcoming second season.
Andy Serkis has been a fan favorite character-actor since the early days of his career, expertly motion capture acting in films such as The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Peter Jackson’s King Kong, and Matt Reeves’s Planet of the Apes trilogy. Since the late 1980s, Serkis has amassed over 100 screen and voice acting credits on IMDb, with half a dozen upcoming performances in various stages of active production. This explains why so many fans excitedly leaped from their seats at the sight of Kino Loy in Andor‘s first season, with no prosthetics weighing the highly accomplished actor down.
It was especially surprising to see Andy Serkis take on the role after he previously provided motion capture and voice work for The Supreme Leader of the First Order, Snoke in The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker. Serkis would not be the first actor to take on multiple roles within the Star Wars universe, as other performers such as Simon Pegg, Clancy Brown, Warwick Davis, and even The Mandalorian creator and showrunner Jon Favreau have portrayed multiple characters over the long and storied course of the franchise’s history.
Kino Loy first appeared in the Star Wars spin-off series as a prisoner on Narkina 5 during the Lothal Calendar’s year 5 BBY. As a floor manager of the prison, Loy was given the task of overseeing his fellow prisoners as they performed various acts of manual labor in a harrowing allegory for the real-world practices of private prisons. Through a rousing monologue from Andy Serkis, Kino Loy became a beloved character after leading his peers in a riot against the guards alongside Diego Luna‘s series lead, Cassian Andor.
After a successful riot, many fans believed Andy Serkis’ tenure with the series to have come to a close, with the character left presumably dead. That is until this past week when Lucasfilm confirmed Serkis would return for Andor’s second season, leading the actor himself to tease a return to Narkina 5 in the show’s future. This tease has many fans wondering why the show would return to the expansive prison set on a small moon and what new ground the show has to tread in that location.
Of course, fans are highly excited for the return of Andy Serkis in the role, as Kino Loy has stolen the hearts of many Andor fans through his brief appearances. As for whether or not Serkis’ character takes a more major role in the upcoming season remains to be seen, but fans will surely stay plugged into any news and updates revealing more info about the show’s second season, which is currently slated to be it’s last.
