Andy Serkis Returning To His Most Beloved Character? He Says It’s Never Left Him
Andy Serkis's favorite role is as Gollum in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit films, so he's willing to return and work again with Peter Jackson.
Sometimes an actor finds a role that’s a match made in heaven, and in the case of Andy Serkis, this couldn’t be more true when it comes to all things Lord of the Rings. A recent Brobible article catches up with the man behind the Gollum, and he expresses nothing but total enthusiasm for his role as Gollum, hoping to continue to be a part of the Middle-Earth franchise. It’s no mystery that the Luther: The Fallen Sun star wants to reprise his role as the lovably menacing ring-bearer because it not only seems like a lot of fun to act out the motions of an eccentric, small, slimy creature, he has nothing but great things to say about the production crew.
Weighing in on his experience working with producers Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, Andy Serkis speaks highly of his experience throughout his tenure at the Middle-Earth franchise, stating, “I think that there are so many other potential Middle-Earth projects which could come about, and if they’re doing them, I would, of course, jump at the chance to have that relationship rekindled. Middle Earth has never left me.” And he’s right; without Andy Serkis, any Lord of the Rings spinoff would be lacking without his portrayal of Gollum.
I think that there are so many other potential Middle-Earth projects which could come about, and if they’re doing them, I would, of course, jump at the chance to have that relationship rekindled … Middle-Earth has never left me.
Andy Serkis on working the Lord of the Rings producers on more projects
It’s one thing to be totally on board with the creative partnerships you’ve forged in the past, but in the case of Andy Serkis, it’s also worth noting that the Lord of the Rings franchise has been very good to him. Not only did The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King take home an Oscar for Best Picture, but the entire Middle-Earth franchise has done incredibly well at the box office, grossing almost $6 billion. So if there’s one Gollum to rule the screen, it only makes sense that Serkis wants to be on board.
The Middle-Earth franchise is the 12th highest-grossing film franchise of all time, and the entire cinematic universe surrounding the franchise has room to grow if they choose to put out more films. In the meantime, Andy Serkis is busier than ever, portraying the main antagonist in Luther: The Fallen Sun alongside Idris Elba. This shows you that Andy Serkis isn’t just a one-trick Sméagol, destined only to be known for his contribution to Lord of the Rings. He will also reprise his role as Alfred in The Batman: Part II.
Andy Serkis has a wild range of roles in his acting career, whether he’s a creepy critter in Lord of the Rings, or Batman‘s butler, leading a revolution of intelligent apes, or a sleazy arms dealer in the MCU. Not every day can you see somebody climbing up the walls in a motion capture suit, delivering the lines as a voice actor, then turning around and playing supporting roles in films like 13 Going on 30 effortlessly.
Though Andy Serkis hasn’t signed any contracts that we know of, you better believe he is on board with anything Peter Jackson envisions for the future of The Lord of the Rings franchise. He speaks so highly of the entire Middle-Earth experience that it’s clear to us that his role as Gollum is quite precious.
