With streaming becoming as prevalent as it is, there are many comedies finding new life when it hits different platforms. With so many options, sometimes viewers just need a good laugh. Movie-goers are likely to get this with an Andy Samberg film almost a decade old. That’s My Boy premiered in 2012 to less than rave reviews with 20% on Rotten Tomatoes. But now it is #5 on IMDbTV as it finds new life. The service can be accessed through Amazon Prime and streams movies for free and fans are taking advantage.
The film stars Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg as father and son, but it’s not always clear which is which. In the film, Donny (Sandler) became a teenage father after a controversial encounter with his teacher. Donny was tasked with raising the child on his own after his teacher became pregnant and went to prison. After his son Todd (Samberg) reaches adulthood, he leaves the house and never speaks to Donny again. Because of being emotionally stunted in his formative years, Donny never grows up. He gets into legal trouble after failing to pay back taxes and his only hope is reconnecting with his son who has become a successful hedge funder.
Conflict ensues when Donny finds Todd right before his wedding. He ingratiates himself into the family, planning on getting money from Todd. This causes the two to reconnect even though Donny was a terrible father. Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg were both cast members on Saturday Night Live in their time and have an easy rapport in the film. That’s My Boy also features Leighton Meester, who had just been coming off her tenure on Gossip Girl at the time. Since then Meester has had a smattering of roles such as the short-lived show Single Parents, but is not often seen on the big screen in recent years despite her unimpeachable portrayal of Upper East Side mean girl Blair Waldorf.
Andy Samberg did not let the critical failure of That’s My Boy Slow him down. After concluding his run on SNL, Samberg went on to showcase his comedic talents further starring in workplace comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The series initially aired on Fox but was canceled after Season 5. It ran 3 more years with the help of NBC (via Decider). The show revolved around the police department of a Brooklyn precinct. With all the hallmarks of a good sitcom it had workplace romance, running gags, and heartfelt humor. The show recently came to an end in 2021, but that wasn’t the end for Samberg.
He starred in what Entertainment Weekly considers one of the better comedies of 2020, Palm Springs, and this year will be moving on to Amazon Prime hit, The Boys. Based on the Garth Ennis comic of the same name, The Boys is an indictment of superhero culture and what it would look like if superheroes took advantage of their privileges. Starring Jack Quaid and Karl Urban, the show is graphic, violent, and often hilarious. Samberg will not be appearing in the live action show that is going into season 3 this coming year.
Instead, the actor is lending his writing skills to the animated spin-off The Boys: Diabolical. Still executive produced by writing partners Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the series is self-admittedly their version of the Animatrix. Each story is written with a different animation style, all taking place in the world of The Boys. Andy Samberg will be writing one of the stories in the series.
That’s My Boy may not have raked in stellar ratings, but it did provide a gift of sorts. After creating a working relationship with Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg invited him to his wedding in 2013 and got more than he expected. When showing up to the wedding, Sandler was completely in character as Donny from That’s My Boy. Samberg detailed his shock while being interviewed on Conan O’Brien in 2013. Jokingly, Sandler teased Samberg with, “am I embarrassing you?”
By all accounts, Adam Sandler is one of the most unpretentious and kind people with the recent honor he was given. With his production company Happy Madison Productions, he continues to make films with friends such as Kevin James. The newest film is Home Team where James will be portraying a story inspired by the real life scandal of Sean Payton. With the combined decades of acting in Hollywood, there is no question that both Andy Samberg and Adam Sandler continue to bring humor to their fans.
