Andrew Lincoln left the once-popular zombie drama The Walking Dead during its ninth season. After Lincoln’s departure, AMC announced a ton of Walking Dead spin-off shows that would feature many fan-favorite characters such as Daryl Dixon and Negan. While AMC did recently confirm that Lincoln will return in his own spin-off, it appears the actor may return in another Walking Dead property before.
Andrew Lincoln was spotted in Paris, France, this past week and even took a photo with a fan. For those unaware, the supposed Daryl Dixon spin-off is set in France and will feature the character battling a new strain of infected zombies that are more aggressive and could run. With Lincoln now spotted in France, the speculation is now whether fans will see Rick Grimes reunite with his brother Daryl before he appears in his own spin-off.
The Daryl Dixon spin-off is expected to begin filming in France soon. AMC is currently airing the final eight episodes of The Walking Dead main show, which began with Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes searching desperately for his family in the zombie apocalypse. When the show started in 2010, few people were familiar with the original source material created by comic book writer Robert Kirkman.
The response and success of the first season gave AMC enough motivation to continue with The Walking Dead. Since 2010, there have been 11 seasons of the show and three spinoff series. AMC originally planned on making multiple Walking Dead featured films with Andrew Lincoln after his departure from the show. However, the network decided to change course and end Rick Grimes’ story on the small screen.
Andrew Lincoln will be joined by Black Panther’s Danai Gurira, who previously played the sword-wielding warrior Michonne in The Walking Dead. Gurira departed the series during its 10th season and has become a bigger star thanks to her work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. AMC and showrunner Scott Gimple has teased that the Rick Grimes/Michonne spinoff show will be an “epic love story.”
Fan interest in the zombie drama has waned since the show’s 7th season premiere, which featured the brutal murder of fan-favorite character Glen at the hands of the villainous Negan, played by actor Jeffery Dean Morgan. Viewership numbers for The Walking Dead have decreased by more than half since 2016, and the show has struggled to regain the audience it once had. AMC may be hoping that the return of Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes will bring back many who stopped watching the show after its heartbreaking season 7 premiere.
It’ll be interesting to see whether the show does adapt the death of Rick Grimes. For those unaware, the comic book version of Andrew Lincoln’s character falls at the hands of Sebastian Milton, the son of Pamela Milton, the president of a thriving city called the commonwealth. If you’ve been keeping up with the show, then you know by now that Sebastian is already dead, and the show is wrapping up the commonwealth arc.
That doesn’t mean that Andrew Lincoln’s character won’t face a similar faith as he did in the comics. We’ll have to wait and see, as AMC seems determined not to cut the head off this limping IP.
