Before you read on any further, there are massive spoilers ahead surrounding Spider-Man: No Way Home. Hopefully, you’ve cut out some time to see the latest Tom Holland-led spidey flick as it came out in mid-December 2021 and stayed in theaters for a very long time – but we digress. Our fun Friday news in the realm of Spider-Man-based possibilities doesn’t focus on Holland’s preciously endearing take on the web-slinging hero, but instead that of ex-Spider-Man, Andrew Garfield. Unlike Holland and the man who gave a rousing performance of “Fever,” so his follow-ups would never need to do something like that, aka Tobey Maguire, Garfield never got his third movie. Whereas Holland’s performance not only earned him three of his own films, but also saw him in a slew of Avengers films, and Maguire at least got to make a third albeit notoriously bad film, Garfield didn’t have that opportunity.
Prior to No Way Home, the last time viewers caught a glimpse of Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker, his life was in shambles. A darker movie than the others, Garfield’s love interest or his “MJ,” Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) doesn’t survive the second film. In a crushing blow to audiences during 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Gwen dies at the hands of the Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan) after her Spider-Man was just a little too late. In (one of the many) heartwarming and tear-inducing scenes during last year’s No Way Home, fans cheered and cried as Garfield’s hero redeemed himself by saving Zendaya’s MJ. Although he couldn’t rescue his beloved, this moment displayed how Garfield’s Peter Parker was still reeling from the loss of Gwen, but happy to come in handy when his new pal’s girlfriend needed some helpful arms.
Phew. This *finally* brings us to today’s news possibility. Since Holland’s latest installment came out, fans have been clamoring for Andrew Garfield to get his due in the form of a completed trilogy. With the multiverse very much going strong, this could absolutely happen. There are whispers circulating in the rumor mill that Garfield’s Spider-Man could take on a fan-favorite anti-hero: Venom. The post-credit sequence in No Way Home saw everyone’s favorite alien symbiote and Eddie (Tom Hardy) enjoying some tasty brews. Chatting up the bartender about Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Thanos (Josh Brolin), fans got the excitement of their lives when it seemed as though Eddie and Venom would be heading out to find Peter Parker. Then, just like that, they were blasted back to their reality via Doctor Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) spell. However, a little piece of Venom was left behind meaning someone else is about to lie prey to a piece of the alien.
With this hint, and the idea of the multiverse as a whole, along with some other rumors rising to the surface, it’s believed that Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man may take on Venom in The Amazing Spider-Man 3. While this is still very much up in the air, it’s clear that Venom will eventually be meeting up and duking it out with one of the Spideys. And what better plot basis for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 than a showdown with Venom? While Eddie himself isn’t a bad dude, Venom’s rage and … ahem control issues … may lead to a path of death and destruction calling for someone to intervene. And who better than Garfield’s Spider-Man to take the lead and kick some alien butt?
