Andrew Garfield Returning As Spider-Man For Superhero Team-Up Movie?
Redditors claim that Andrew Garfield will appear as Spider-Man in Venom 3.
Spider-Man: No Way Home was a hit film for many reasons, including the fact that it gave us a chance to revisit previous actors for the character such as Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. Seeing them suit up again was enough to leave many fans wanting more, and if some leakers are correct, we might see the return of Garfield’s Spider-Man in a big way. According to this Reddit compilation of leaks regarding Sony’s universe of Spider-Man films, Garfield will return as Spider-Man in the upcoming film Venom 3.
Now, if you’re screaming at your computer or phone about how silly it is to trust supposed leaks that originally came from 4Chan…well, nobody can really blame you. Even those posting the info to Reddit preface the leaks (which include far more than the rumor about Andrew Garfield) by saying that all of them should be taken “with a grain of salt.”
However, many of these leaks have proven to be true over the years, including very spot-on previous leaks about films such as Avengers: Endgame.
So, what does the rumor mill say about Andrew Garfield suiting up as Spider-Man again? There are actually two different rumors, with the first being that Sony approached the actor about being the regular webhead in their superhero universe (remember, this universe is very different from the MCU).
This leak claims that Garfield denied the opportunity and that Sony is thinking about setting some future films in the character’s universe, where he would have retired from crimefighting.
The more exciting rumor that we mentioned earlier is that Andrew Garfield would appear in Venom 3 along with a different, unnamed protagonist that will be introduced in Madame Web. The same leak claims that this protagonist was originally going to be the fan-favorite character Black Cat, but that the popularity of all the different Spider-people in Across the Spider-Verse prompted Sony to shift gears.
The leak makes no mention of what relationship these heroes would have with Venom, which should be interesting since his films have gone out of their way to establish him as a hero rather than a villain.
While it’s interesting to think we could see Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man again, it’s frankly more exciting to think that Sony has finally realized the need to have a protagonist (or more than one) to anchor their universe.
The studio has effectively been cannibalizing Spider-Man’s Rogues’ Gallery to create films like Venom (a surprise hit) and Morbius (an unsurprising flop), and leakers insist that the Sinister Six film that was heavily foreshadowed by The Amazing Spider-Man 2 way back in 2014.
Villains are nothing without their heroes, and it sounds like Sony has belatedly realized their rival superhero universe needs some prominent good guys that, ideally, don’t eat people.
Ultimately, we think that the advice to take these leaks with a grain of salt is very wise. We’d frankly love to see Andrew Garfield in the red and blue outfit again, but the blunt truth is that the actor (who is pushing 40 years old) is a bit too old to anchor a new superhero franchise.
For that matter, we think it’s likely Sony’s attempts to save its live-action superhero universe will be as successful as Spider-Man’s attempt to save Gwen Stacy.
