Andrew Garfield Will Play Carl Sagan In New Movie
Andrew Garfield will play Carl Sagan in a new movie about the creation of the Golden Record.
If you’re looking to get a little interstellar in your imbibing of inspiring stories, then you’ll be pleased to know that Andrew Garfield will be portraying Carl Sagan in a biopic entitled Voyager. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Garfield will star alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones, who will be portraying Sagan’s wife, Ann Druyan. The film will not only explore the depths of our cosmos but also highlight the real-life love story of Sagan and Druyan.
The screenplay for the upcoming Andrew Garfield film was co-written by Leilo and Jessica Goldberg and is reported to be based on extensive interviews with Ann Druyan and NASA personnel who worked on the Golden Record project alongside Sagan. Set in 1977, we will get a closer look at Sagan’s contribution to the project, which involved sending the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 probes into space. And the Golden Records contained within each probe serve a very specific purpose: to be a suitable form of first contact with any form of extraterrestrial life that finds them.
In many ways, the Golden Record is the ultimate intergalactic mix-tape, and we’re confident that Andrew Garfield’s portrayal of Carl Sagan will be as enthusiastic as Sagan’s own enthusiasm while working on the Golden Record project. Comprised of 115 analog-encoded photographs, salutations in 55 languages, a 12-minute audio-montage of sounds from Earth, and 90 minutes of music, the Golden Record will exist long after humanity is no longer a part of the equation.
But there’s more to the story because this is simply the setting in which Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan met and fell in love. And this love story between Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan will be the central point of focus. Ann Druyan is also enthusiastic about Andrew Garfield and Daisy Edgar-Jones portraying the young couple because they will bring “that cosmic love story to vivid life.”
If past work is any indication of future success, we’re certainly in for a treat. Considering that Andrew Garfield was nominated for an Emmy with his portrayal of Jeb Pyre in Under the Banner of Heaven and also saw nominations for Best Actor for his performances in Hacksaw Ridge, and Tick, Tick, Boom, we know that Carl Sagan’s legacy is in good hands.
Not only has Andrew Garfield seen praise for his past work, but Daisy Edgar-Jones also saw a Golden Globe nomination for her work on Under the Banner of Heaven. The funny thing about both stars working on the same FX limited series together is that their stories took place on different timelines, giving them no screen time together. But if you look at interviews from around this time, their off-screen chemistry is evident, and it’s safe to say that they’re familiar with each other’s acting styles.
But since we’re still in the development phases, we’ll probably have to wait for a little while Andrew Garfield wraps up production on his current project, We Live in Time, which is currently filming and co-stars Florence Pugh. In the meantime, we strongly suggest you queue up Cosmos on Hulu and watch in awe as Carl Sagan explains the magnificence of the unknown while we wait for further developments on Voyager.
