The Garfaissance continues full-steam ahead, and a suddenly resurgent Andrew Garfield is starring in his very own upcoming prestige television mini-series. The recent Academy Award nominee and once and maybe future Spider-Man is set to take the lead of Under the Banner of Heaven, an FX series based on the non-fiction book of the same name by Jon Krakauer. A trailer was just released for the show, and by the looks of it, it is going to be the kind of grime and shadowy true-crime procedural that has exploded in popularity in the next year. Andrew Garfield stars as Detective Jeb Pyre, a Fundamentalist Mormon police officer investigating the violent murder of Brenda Lafferty and her young daughter Erica in 1984. There are a lot of quick cuts to Garfield standing in darkened doorways and looking emotional, and a voiceover that indicates that this incident is rocking the expectations of the small community in which it took place. There is also repeated imagery of Mormon youths and a lot of white clothing. Garfield seems to be hinting at some kind of tie to previous belief systems and expectations, little of which will probably be surprising to those who have read the 2003 book. There’s more than a little bit of David Fincher in the tense, near-silent atmosphere of dread here, but there are worse people to take a cue from than the master of the investigative procedural.
The last several years have been pretty good for Andrew Garfield. He had a brief period of being considered an also-ran after the relative disappointments of Sony Pictures’ The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but it’s not really his fault he was sandwiched between Sam Raimi’s groundbreaking trilogy and the utter dominance of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Garfield starred in several smaller-scale films after that, including Breathe and Under the Silver Lake, as well as a noted stint performing in a London production of Tony Kushner’s Angels in America. However, he quickly drew notice and acclaim for portraying Jonathan Larson, the writer of the iconic musical Rent, in the directorial debut of Lin-Manuel Miranda, Tick, Tick… Boom! For that part, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor, losing out to Will Smith in King Richard.
Andrew Garfield also thrilled comic book fans the world over by reprising his version of Peter Parker in the colossal blockbuster film Spider-Man: No Way Home, along with his predecessor Tobey Maguire and successor Tom Holland. Garfield received critical acclaim for his portrayal of his character viewing himself as a disappointment, adding a near meta-textual element to his storyline that he himself said brought him closure to the performance. He also co-starred with Jessica Chastain in The Eyes of Tammy Faye, a biopic of the Christian television evangelist Tammy Faye Bakker, which did win her an Oscar. Under the Banner of Heaven is set to premiere on FX on April 28, 2022 and will co-star Sam Worthington and Daisy Edgar-Jones.
