Andor Season 2 Coming Even Sooner Than Expected?
Tony Gilroy says Andor Season 2 might come sooner than 2024 if more money is put toward the post-production effort.
Disney+ has hit it big this year with the release of Andor, the latest addition to the Star Wars franchise that stars Diego Luna as thief Cassian Andor. Andor was renewed for a season 2 that is currently filming, but according to Screen Rant, the new season could possibly drop sooner than expected. Series creator Tony Gilroy notes that most likely the second season will be available to viewers in about two years, but it might come sooner if post-production funding comes through at a larger scale and faster than what occurred for them in the first season.
With production costs on Andor mostly grouped to post-production in terms of major expenses, Tony Gilroy seems to have a point about what it takes to get the finished product out to audiences. The Michael Clayton writer and director confirms what many experts already know about the Marvel Cinematic Universe and many of the Star Wars series of projects, that money goes a long way in post-production. Disney is well equipped to handle many of these visual effects needs, but more money thrown at the situation might help bring Andor season 2 to streaming subscribers faster.
The first season of Andor was released on Disney+ on September 21 and is still running on the subscription streaming platform until November 23 when the 12th episode airs. The series is set up to be a prequel to the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the 2016 entry into the Star Wars franchise that starred Felicity Jones and Diego Luna. Andor season 2 will conclude the series, and many Star Wars fans are predicting that the series will end its storylines by showing some of the other well-known characters from Rogue One.
In Andor, Diego Luna plays Cassian Andor before he joins the Rebellion, often depicting the character in the first season as ambivalent towards the idea of becoming a rebel. The series also stars Kyle Soller as Syril Karn, Adria Arjona as Bix Caleen, Fiona Shaw as Cassian’s adoptive mother Maarva Andor, and Stellan Skarsgård as Luthen Rael. While a premiere date for Andor season 2 has yet to be confirmed, Tony Gilroy’s comments makes it seem that the newer season might come earlier than originally expected.
Andor follows a long line of television shows that have helped made Disney+ the platform of choice for Star Wars fans in the last couple of years. The streamer debuted The Mandalorian in 2019 to rave reviews from critics including multiple Primetime Emmy Award nominations, making it the go-to television series of that season. Since then, several iterations of the Star Wars franchise have premiered on the platform, including The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, as well as the upcoming Ahsoka starring Rosario Dawson.
