Andor Season 2 Will Finally Bring Back A Favorite Rogue One Character
Andor and Rogue One writer confirms that the fan-favorite droid K-2SO, voiced by Alan Tudyk, will appear in Season 2 of Andor.
Not since C-3PO and R2D2 were introduced in the first Star Wars film has a droid character in the franchise been as beloved as Alan Tudyk‘s K-2SO in 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Fans were disappointed to learn the droid would initially be absent in Andor, but with the streaming of the Season 1 finale, series creator Tony Gilroy has confirmed that Andor Season 2 will see Tudyk reprise his voice role as K-2SO.
Collider reported on Wednesday that Gilroy made the confirmation, telling the outlet he saw the introduction of K-2SO as “one of the responsibilities” of Andor Season 2. “Obviously, if we’re going to walk into Rogue, we have to deal with that,” the writer said.
In Rogue One we learn K-2SO was originally an Imperial droid who Andor reprogrammed, though we’re never told exactly how or when. In spite of Tudyk’s insistence he wouldn’t be in the first season of the Star Wars series, fans were momentarily fooled into thinking K-2SO would show up before Andor Season 2 when a droid of the same series–KX–encounters the hero. Still loyal to the Empire, however, the KX security droid knocks Andor out.
Back in August, Tony Gilroy revealed not only that Andor Season 2 would conclude the prequel series, but that the series finale “will walk the audience directly into Rogue One and directly into the first scene of Rogue One.” It’s a reveal that suggests we may see some other stars from the movie reprise their role in the series. The first scene of Rogue One is the one in which Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn) travels to Lah’mu where Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen)–the future designer of the Death Star–is in hiding with his family.
Along with Diego Luna playing the titular hero, the show’s inaugural season has already seen Genevieve O’Reilly return as Mon Mothma, Forest Whitaker back as the fringe radical Saw Gerrera, and Aidan Cook as Gerrera’s righthand man Benthic “Two Tubes.” If Andor Season 2 is meant to go into the first scene of Rogue One, then along with Tudyk once again voicing K-2SO, we could see Ben Mendelsohn and Mads Mikkelsen back as well. While Felicity Jones’ character Jyn Erso is also in that first Rogue One scene, her involvement would seem like a longshot since Jyn is still a child.
If you’ll forgive some speculation that may or may not turn into Andor Season 2 spoilers, Gilroy’s determination to end the series where Rogue One begins suggests some other things about the show’s future. Since Stellan Skarsgård’s Luthen Rael seems to be an important figure in the early Rebellion who nevertheless is nowhere in Rogue One or the original trilogy, it suggests his character has a good chance of meeting an unhappy end before Andor concludes.
Also, if Andor Season 2 leads to Orson Krennic finding Galen Erso, it means the series will soon reach up into higher echelons of the Empire than we’ve seen in the first season; suggesting that possibly appearances from Hayden Christensen’s Vader and/or Ian McDiarmid’s Emperoor Palpatine could be on the way.
