Rumor Says Ana De Armas Is Wanted For Spider-Woman
Sony is rumored to be looking at Ana de Armas as the titular hero of the upcoming Spider-Woman movie.
While Sony has confirmed its intention to develop a Spider-Woman movie, further details remain scarce. However, a recent casting rumor says Sony is eyeing Ana De Armas for the lead role, with Olivia Wilde as a potential director. If everything goes according to plan, the female-led superhero offering will hit theaters in 2024.
According to information shared on Reddit, the Spider-Woman movie will delve into the story of Jessica Drew, who acquires spider-like abilities during childhood as a result of a serum developed by her father. Unfortunately, she falls into the clutches of a criminal organization that aims to exploit her as a weapon. After successfully escaping, Jessica lives a tranquil life until the organization tracks her down.
This compels her to team up with a government agent to bring down the criminal group. Along with Ana de Armas as Jessica Drew, Rebecca Ferguson is being considered as the lead villain. Sony’s effort to build a cinematic universe featuring various Spider-Man characters has faced challenges, as evidenced by the mixed reception of films like Morbius.
Despite these setbacks, Sony appears determined to boost its prospects by enlisting the talents of Ana de Armas. The Blonde actress recently earned her first Academy Award nomination and is set to star in the highly anticipated John Wick spin-off Ballerina. She also starred opposite Chris Evans in the AppleTv+ romantic action-adventure comedy, Ghosted, directed by Dexter Fletcher.
While her role in Spider-Woman hasn’t been confirmed, Ana de Armas has been linked to superhero films on multiple occasions. She was considered for the role of Catwoman in The Batman, which eventually went to Zoe Kravitz. The actress was also rumored to appear in Sony’s El Muerto, but the movie was removed from the studio’s 2024 release calendar.
Adding fuel to the Ana de Armas casting rumors is that Sony is looking for an actress within the age range of 25 to 35. Other than that, the Spider-Woman movie aims to stay true to the Marvel comics by incorporating key elements, such as Jessica Drew’s memory loss. The official search for someone to bring the iconic superhero to life on screen is ongoing.
There have been other stars whose names have been tossed around to play Spider-Woman. Hailee Steinfeld has been a favorite after starring as Kate Bishop in the Disney+ series Hawkeye. She also lends her voice to Gwen Stacy in the Spider-Verse trilogy, and fans have fervently endorsed her for the role of Spider-Woman in live-action.
Alexandra Daddario’s name has also been mentioned, alongside Ana de Armas and Hailee Steinfeld. While The White Lotus star has yet to appear in a live-action superhero film, she did lend her voice to the animated DCU movie Superman: Man of Tomorrow, where she portrayed Lois Lane – a journalist and the romantic interest of Superman.
Witnessing Daddario’s charismatic portrayal of a live-action superhero within the Spider-Man universe would undoubtedly be a remarkable addition to her incredible repertoire. However, it seems like Ana de Armas is the top pick for Sony as of late.
