Ana de Armas has been crushing it of late, churning out a ton of big-screen work in recent years with even more on the way. The actress might even be making a franchise turn now with huge news she’s been cast in a major picture alongside some other major names. Ana de Armas has just been confirmed to star in The Gray Man.
This recent news could be big for Ana de Armas considering the names involved and the scope of the movie’s story. The Gray Man will come to Netflix and the platform has already announced that it is the most money they’ve ever committed to a single film. Apparently, that looks like something in the $200 million dollar range, an astounding amount for a film that isn’t part of a major cinematic universe (yet).
The Gray Man is based on Mark Greaney’s 2009 novel of the same name. It focuses on Court Gentry, a trained assassin and former CIA agent (aren’t they all?) who is tasked with various tasks of killing and subversion. In the book, Gentry must rescue his handler while also evading Lloyd Hanson who is out to kill him. There are ten books in the series so far, all centered on Gentry. Other titles include On Target, Ballistic, and Dead Eye. The look and feel of the story have a very Jason Bourne-y vibe and if that franchise is any indication, there’s almost no end to stories about trained killers with a particular set of skills.
Joe and Anthony Russo are on board directing the new film and it will be the first time they’ve worked with Ana de Armas. The brothers have already signaled they want this movie to eventually turn into a franchise with multiple films in the timelines. There’s plenty of source material to mine with The Gray Man so churning out multiple films is definitely in the cards. The brothers already have a good relationship with Netflix having written and produced Extraction which was one of the highest-performing movies of the year for the streaming service.
Ana de Armas will be joined in The Gray Man by a couple of other actors she’s worked with on previous films. The first is Ryan Gosling who’ll be starring in the lead role of Gentry. The two worked together on Bladerunner 2049 with de Armas playing Joi, K’s (Gosling) holographic girlfriend in the dystopian sequel.
Chris Evans has also been cast in this film. He and Ana de Armas shared the screen in Knives Out. Evans has also, obviously, worked with the Russo brothers on a few little plucky startup movies like Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame as well as Captain America: Civil War and Winter Soldier. Evans will play Hanson, the primary antagonist.
It’s unclear who Ana de Armas will be playing but it’s worth noting that in The Gray Man series, Gentry has few love interests. His relationships just aren’t all that central to the story. It stands to reason then that de Armas could be cast as another assassin-type in the story, or as possibly another hired gun. The movie’s notes explain that this first one will focus on Gentry saving his daughters, but judging by the age range difference, it isn’t likely de Armas will be cast in either of those roles.
If you can’t wait until The Gray Man hits the screen, fear not, there’s plenty of Ana de Armas coming down the road over the next year or so. She’s in post-production on three different films, all of which are incredibly high profile. The first is the next James Bond film, No Time to Die which just wrapped filming. She gets a little spy work in here, helping out James as a CIA agent. Then there’s Adrian Lyne’s Deep Water in which she stars alongside real-life boyfriend Ben Affleck. And finally, she’s set to star as Marilyn Monroe in Andrew Dominik’s biopic about the actress and model’s tragic life. As far as big-budget, highly-anticipated films, no actress’s resume looks fuller than Ana de Armas right now.
With the major casting pieces of The Gray Man in place, Ana de Armas, and all, we are likely to start getting firmer timelines around production. And whenever it hits screens, it will be a major event with some of the biggest names in Hollywood already attached.
