American Rust is finally receiving its second season after being picked up by Prime Video, following the show’s cancellation on Showtime after just one season. Interestingly, Showtime decided to cancel the show due to lackluster critical reception, but Rotten Tomatoes shows that, in spite of a mixed and borderline negative reception by the critics, the show has a high audience score.
This only goes to prove that shows are made for the viewers and not the critics and that there are still those in the entertainment business willing to make money from the products we, the people, actually like.
Season 2 of American Rust, titled American Rust: Broken Justice, will appear on Amazon Prime Video on March 28, 2024, for subscribers to enjoy. The series follows Del Harris—portrayed by The Newsroom‘s Jeff Daniels—the chief of a police station in the fictional town of Buell, Pennsylvania.
Harris is a man burdened by his past, wrestling with his moral compass as he navigates the blurred lines between right and wrong. Judging by the recently dropped trailer, the upcoming Season 2 picks up where Season 1 ended.

The characters are seemingly trying to rebuild their lives following the events of American Rust Season 1, but the upcoming narrative introduces a series of seemingly unrelated murders, which points towards a much larger conspiracy that threatens everyone in Buell. Unfortunately, that’s everything we know thus far about this fantastic show; more details are likely to be unveiled in the coming days leading to the Season 2 release.
American Rust has a bit of history behind it since the adaptation of Philipp Meyer’s critically acclaimed novel was initially ordered as a straight-to-series release for USA Network in November 2017. However, several months later, USA Network decided not to move forward with the project, with reports suggesting that the producers weren’t able to find a big star for the leading role.
The series, with Jeff Daniels attached to star and produce the show, was then picked up by Showtime, where it aired to an abysmal critical reception, after which the show was canceled.
