The DC FanDome event on Saturday was a veritable onslaught of teaser trailers and first images for movies that are coming in the DC Extended Universe and beyond. It’s an exciting time considering all that is planned with new characters coming around as well as the return of some popular folks from the past. Two of those are going to be Jason Momoa and Amber Heard who will be back as Aquaman and Queen Mera respectively in the much-anticipated sequel. We got a behind-the-scenes teaser for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom on Saturday that showed some of the production for the film as well as some hints as to what is in store.
The Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom teaser is a behind-the-scenes look at some of the making of the film. We get Jason Momoa talking about his excitement at returning to this world and this character, coming off the massive success that was the first Aquaman movie. And there are other familiar faces as well with the returns of not only Amber Heard but also Yahya Abdul-Mateen’s Black Manta returning as well. Check out what’s in store for this sequel and some of the lengths they are going to in order to top the first one.
While we don’t get many actual shots from the movie with the teaser mostly focusing on the on-set time that goes into making such a massive film, there are glimpses of how this is going to shake out. We see Jason Momoa in a number of different scenes, actually a lot of times even out of the traditional Aquaman suit. There looks like a trip to an arctic region as well a number of different standoffs with characters like Black Manta and even Patrick Wilson’s Ocean Master. There’s also Amber Heard as Queen Mera giving as punch as well and she’s dressed in her full costume.
With Jason Momoa and Amber Heard returning along with director James Wan, the entire cast and crew seem intent on making this next movie even bigger than the first. They say as much in this little teaser. That will be a tall order considering how the original movie shook out. 2018s Aquaman was a massive blockbuster, earning almost $1.15 billion at the worldwide box office when it was all said and done. It stands as the highest-grossing DC Extended Universe movie to date.
While other DC Justice League actors and actresses might have their stories somewhat in limbo, that isn’t the case for Jason Momoa and Amber Heard. Both were featured in Zack Snyder’s director’s cut movie and there are rumors that even more is in store for Heard specifically. It’s been rumored that she will have a much bigger role in this next movie and could be looking at a solo feature in the future. For now, we’ll have to wait to see how this next one plays out. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom isn’t set to release until December 22nd of next year.
