There has been a lot of speculation and conflicting information regarding Amber Heard’s appearance in Aquaman 2, and some rumors suggested that Warner Bros removed the actress from the sequel. However, the new word on the internet indicates that Amber Heard just won a major Aquaman 2 victory.
According to tipster Daniel Richtman, Amber Heard will reprise her role as the second lead in Aquaman 2, with even more screen-time in the upcoming sequel to the 2018’s hit. This is big news, especially considering all the controversy surrounding the actress, her ongoing legal battles with her ex-husband, and the impact those have on her career. Previous information suggested that Warner Bros. wanted to remove the actress from the movie, but Heard’s representatives quickly dismissed these rumors. Further reports insisted that Warner Bros wanted to limit her screen-time due to the controversy surrounding the actress, which Heard wasn’t willing to accept.
Allegedly, her ongoing legal battles with her ex-husband Johnny Depp prompted Warner Bros to pressure Amber Heard into leaving the franchise, but she stayed persistent. Some reports even suggested that Warner Bros. introduced more female leads, potentially stealing Mera’s (Heard’s character) spotlight. According to some sources, up to four second-lead characters could replace Heard’s character in the franchise, including Nicole Kidman’s role as Queen Atlanna. Some even speculated Emilia Clarke as a new lead role, given her cooperation with Jason Momoa in hit-series Game of Thrones. However, no official statements about Heard’s replacement were given at the time.
Naturally, Amber Heard was looking to protect her interests, and her position in a high-grossing franchise. Her reappearance in Zack Snyder’s Justice League sparked an anger-fueled outcry from the fans, who wish to see her canceled alongside her ex-husband Johnny Depp. However, in another insider leak by Richtman, Heard has full support from Jason Momoa, Zack Snyder, and Aquaman’s director James Wan, who’s actively fighting to keep the actress as the second-lead role.
With solid support from her colleagues within the industry, Amber Heard managed to get what she wanted, as her role remains second-lead. Supposedly, she also managed to secure a more significant chunk of the underwater action at the same time, guaranteeing her more screen-time and of course a greater share of the profits. With that said, Aquaman 2 is still in its pre-production phase, and the actress has time until summer to negotiate even better terms before the shooting starts.
It’s still unclear why Warner Bros didn’t cut ties with the actress because of the surrounding controversy when they outright removed Depp from the Fantastic Beasts franchise for the same reasons. Amber Heard is still a part of a huge legal battle with Johnny Depp, over allegations that include domestic violence, with new evidence shifting the role of the perpetrator from Depp to Heard and vice versa, emerging every day.
One thing is clear: Amber Heard is still the second lead character in the upcoming Aquaman 2, which starts shooting in June 2021, with an announced release on December 16, 2022.
