Amanda Seyfried is taking on the role of one of the biggest scam artists to ever do it when she stars in The Dropout on Hulu. It details the story of disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes and will dive into what exactly happened with this once-unicorn company. We are getting our first looks at Seyfried in the role and how this miniseries is taking shape. It looks like it could be a good one, based on one of the more fascinating and deceitful stories in quite some time.
The latest looks at Amanda Seyfried as Elizabeth Holmes come via Discussing Film and TVLine and show the actress in various scenes for the series. These first images very much have it appear that it is lonely at the top, especially when you are involved in one of the biggest financial scams of our time. The fraud allegedly perpetrated by Holmes and some of her cohorts had astronomical sums of money involved with dollar numbers in the billions. In The Dropout, Amanda Seyfried will be starring as Elizabeth Holmes and the series is based on the podcast ABC Audio podcast of the same name. It is set to follow the story of how Holmes created the company Theranos and the controversy and deceit that went into its meteoric rise and astronomical valuation and then, ultimately, its demise. The company had touted its ability to perform rapid blood tests with only minimal samples. The technology, at the time, was set to transform the health landscape and at one point the company was valued at more than $10 billion dollars.
But what we will see in this new Amanda Seyfried series is that Elizabeth Holmes and company didn’t really have the goods. Though they claimed the technology worked, it didn’t. After ten years, the company was outed and Holmes, along with company president Sunny Balwani were brought up on charges by the SEC. Additionally, she is currently on trial for counts of wire fraud and conspiracy stemming from investment money taken under allegedly false pretenses. If convicted, Holmes could face 20 years in prison.
In The Dropout, Amanda Seyfried will portray Holmes during the company’s rise and Sunny Balwani will be played by Naveen Andrews. He’s also featured in the above screenshots. Other cast members include William H. Macy as Richard Fuisz and Laurie Metcalf as Phyllis Gardner. The two real-life folks were at the center of the Theranos controversy with Fuisz at one point sued by the company and Gardner one of the initial skeptics of the company’s claims. Other cast notables include Stephen Fry, Michael Ironside, Elizabeth Marvel, and Utkarsh Ambudkar.
It is still going to be a while before we catch Amanda Seyfried in The Dropout. The series isn’t set to hit Hulu until March of next year. Seyfried takes the role from Kate McKinnon who was originally cast in the lead. But the latter left the production early last year. Now it’s Seyfried’s chance for another star turn in what could be a crazy story.
