In recent years, Star Wars has tried to put its female stars front and center, whether with Rey in the new trilogy, or with Jyn Erso in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Even as Lucasfilm starts expanding their Mandalorian universe, it looks as though many of those stories will be led by female characters. Now, a new rumor suggests that Star Wars might be getting an all-female team-up movie.

This latest rumor comes from Daniel Richtman on his Patreon page, which simply says that Star Wars is looking to have a group of female characters leading one of their upcoming movies. While Richtman doesn’t say where this news is coming from, or what his sources are for this information, this wouldn’t be much of a surprise considering Star Wars’ attempt to increase the number of great female characters in this universe.

As of right now, there aren’t many Star Wars films that we know of in development. Lucasfilm has announced that Taika Waititi is working on a new Star Wars film, although little is known about that film, or about Rian Johnson’s trilogy, which is apparently still in the works. However, the next Star Wars film is Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron, which is scheduled for a Christmas 2023 release date. Considering Jenkins’ ability to make a great action film with a primarily female cast in Wonder Woman, it’s entirely possible this project could be Rogue Squadron.

Yet considering how few Star Wars films seem to be in the works presently, and Disney’s move towards focusing on Disney+, it looks even more likely that we will see an all-female cast leading one of Lucasfilm’s upcoming shows. Already in the works is Ahsoka, The Mandalorian spinoff starring Ahsoka Tano. There were also rumors that Gina Carano would be the lead of Rangers of the New Republic, but it’s unclear if she would have been leading an all-female cast for that show.

Another series that has been in development for quite some time and shrouded in mystery is The Acolyte. This new series from Russian Doll creator Leslye Headland has been rumored to be a mystery-thriller series centered around a group of female characters. Russian Doll showed Headland’s ability to create great, strong, and interesting female characters on television, so it’s possible the rumors around The Acolyte are true.

However, if Lucasfilm does decide to make an all-female Star Wars film, it’s unclear if this movie would feature an entirely new cast of characters, or would include some characters we already know. The majority of female characters from the films are either dead in this universe (Jyn Erso), the actors playing them have died (Princess Leia), or the actors have decided they’re done with the franchise (Rey), so maybe this series would integrate female characters from the Disney+ shows into upcoming films?

At this point, Disney is staying pretty secretive about their upcoming Star Wars projects, so any rumors so far should probably be taken with a grain of salt. But it would be exciting to see what Lucasfilm could do with an entire cast of kick-ass females within this universe.
