Alfred Molina learned the hard way that he must keep his mouth shut about Marvel appearances, as he revealed he had got into trouble with the MCU brass after accidentally letting it slip that his Doc Ock was appearing in Spider-Man: No Way Home. According to Molina, “Just accidentally, I was talking to a journalist who said, ‘So, you know, how’s the Spider-Man movie going?’ And I went, ‘Oh, great thanks’. Then literally the next day, Variety was like, ‘Alfred Molina reveals Doc Ock returns.'”
The major slip-up was an honest mistake, but Alfred Molina also revealed that he received calls from Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige about how much trouble he was in for letting the Marvel cameo slip. He added, “I was getting phone calls from Amy Pascal, Kevin Feige was on the red carpet somewhere and somebody asked him about some Marvel movie and apparently, he got a bit snippy and turned around and said, ‘Ask Alfred Molina.'”
To be honest, we can understand why Marvel was so upset with Alfred Molina, as his role in No Way Home was a massive spoiler to be had. No Way Home was the most ambitious Marvel entry to date, and bringing back all three Spider-Man actors, along with the villains that tormented them in their respective movies, was huge. Also, Marvel should have known how hard it was to keep all that a secret, especially when it came to the trailer.
Marvel fans are quite crafty, and it was revealed in one of the No Way Home trailers that blank marks existed, which indicated that Sandman was fighting not one, but at least another Spider-Man. Alfred Molina wasn’t the only one that had led slip some big news about the ambitious Spider-Man crossover. Also, it was not like as those these spoilers made the movie any less spectacular.
In fact, Spider-Man: No Way Home skyrocketed into the #6 all-time earner at the movies, with a staggering $1.97 billion in worldwide box office numbers. While Marvel fans had certainly figured out quite a good amount of information before the movie came out, it didn’t make anyone less interested in seeing it. Alfred Molina, Jamie Foxx, Thomas Haden Church, and Rhys Ifans were still fantastic together.
Marvel has to understand that they cannot keep everything hidden, especially from fans who make it a point to find out whatever information they can about their favorite movies and shows. Alfred Molina certainly did have a slip of the tongue, but it wasn’t as if he was going to be fired from the movie because that happened. Doc Ock was too important of a piece of that movie that letting him go would have sunk the entire thing.
Spider-Man: No Way Home also effectively opened wide the idea of the multiverse, and bringing back all three Spider-Man actors, along with Alfred Molina and the villains, means they can all return again. Avengers: Secret Wars is meant to explode the multiverse, and we could be seeing every villain and hero return one final time in one of the biggest battles ever seen.
For those who have not seen it yet, Spider-Man: No Way Home – Extended Cut is available to stream on most apps, and we can all appreciate Alfred Molina in the cast in a longer movie. We certainly forgive Molina for innocently letting everyone know that he was returning as Doc Ock, and we hope that Kevin Feige will do the same, eventually. He should certainly be brought back one final time in Avengers: Secret Wars.
