Alec Baldwin’s Rust Film Will Now Be A Documentary
Alec Baldwin's Rust is now going to be the subject of a documentary following the on-set accident and celebrating the life of Halyna Hutchins.
The Alec Baldwin Rust saga continues to develop new wrinkles. Variety announced that there will now be a documentary about the making and completion of the troubled film. The documentary will also focus on slain cinematographer Haylna Hutchins’ life and work.
According to Variety, the production and Hutchins’ widower both support the documentary being made. Rachel Manson will be directing the documentary, and Julee Metz is producing. In the meantime, Alec Baldwin and the rest of the cast and crew of Rust are set to begin filming again sometime in Spring.
The production also recently announced that Bianca Cline (Marcel the Shell With Shoes On) will be taking over as cinematographer in Hutchins’ stead. Cline announced that she would be donating her salary to a charity in memory of Hutchins. While Alec Baldwin and the newly assembled Rust crew are getting ready to film soon, there are still numerous lawsuits to contend with.
Matthew Hutchins, the widower of Halyna, originally filed a lawsuit against Alec Baldwin and the Rust production. However, that lawsuit is currently in the process of being settled, with Matthew and the couple’s son receiving a portion of the profits of the film along with an insurance payout. Matthew is also an executive producer of the film.
Halyna Hutchins’ parents and sister have also filed a lawsuit against Alec Baldwin and the Rust producers. Attorney Gloria Allred, who represents the family, says they support Matthew’s decision to settle, but now they are seeking their own reparations for the wrongful death of their family member. Mamie Mitchell, the script supervisor, is also suing for emotional distress and pain in her ears and head.
In addition to the various lawsuits, Alec Baldwin has also been charged with involuntary manslaughter. Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed has also been charged. Both have denied wrongdoing and have pointed to other factors leading to the death of Hutchins.
Alec Baldwin and Hannah Gutierrez Reed are both set to be arraigned in the involuntary manslaughter case next week. It remains to be seen if these Rust lawsuits are settled or if Baldwin and Reed will be found guilty in the involuntary manslaughter case. Depending on the results from the lawsuits and the arraignment, it’s possible production could be further delayed.
Alec Baldwin was holding the gun when it went off at the Bonanza Creek Ranch in New Mexico, though he denies that he pulled the trigger and that the gun went off after the hammer was released. The bullet struck director Joel Souza, injuring him. It also struck Haylna Hutchins, who died due to her injuries.
The Rust production will not be filming in New Mexico anymore, and most of the crew has been replaced. Safety officers Gary Jensen and Paul Jordan will supervise the ongoing production. The production will also move forward without using functional firearms and blanks.
Alec Baldwin stars in Rust alongside Jensen Ackles, Travis Fimmel, Shylo Molina, Frances Fisher, and Brady Noon. Joel Souza writes and directs. We’ll keep you updated on the ongoing cases and lawsuits involved with the film’s production.
