Ahsoka hasn’t launched on Disney+ yet, and it looks like the streaming giant is already planning on a season 2. Small Screen reports that a quarterly earnings report from Disney revealed the words “(Season 1)” after the series name. Knowing that, one can assume a second season of the Mandalorian spin-off is a given.

The Ahsoka series will star Rosario Dawson, reprising her role from season 2 of the Mandalorian. Dawson will be joined by Eman Esfandi as Ezra Bridger. Esfandi will be the first person to portray Bridger in live action replacing Taylor Gray, who voiced Ezra on Rebels for four seasons.

Ahsoka was previously designated a limited series like Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Lucasfilm hasn’t given any reason for why the show was changed to a regular series more akin to The Mandalorian or Andor. Perhaps what Disney has seen of the series so far was so impressive that it gave them the confidence to plan an Ahsoka Season 2 before Season 1 has come out?

All that’s known about Ahsoka so far is that it will follow the titular Togruta as she travels around a galaxy, far, far, away in search of Grand Admiral Thrawn. The series will be Thrawn’s first appearance in live-action as well. Lars Mikkelsen is rumored to be playing the Grand Admiral, a role he will no doubt be reprising in the inevitable Ahsoka Season 2.

Ahsoka season 2

With so little known about Season 1, what might happen in Ahsoka Season 2 is anyone’s guess. One possibility would be for Lucasfilm to finally introduce fan-favorite character Mara Jade into the current Disney canon. Jade has strong ties to Thrawn in the Star Wars: Legends continuity and would make an interesting addition to Ahsoka.

It would take some work to fit Mara Jade into the Disney Star Wars continuity since her initial storyline–trying to kill Luke Skywalker but marrying him instead–would conflict with what Disney has done with Luke. It wouldn’t be impossible, however, and a viable solution would be to replace Luke with Ahsoka Tano. That would give Rosario Dawson a rival/romantic interest for Ahsoka Season 2 and fit perfectly with Disney’s new progressive approach to storytelling.

Ahsoka Season 2 ultimately hinges on Ahsoka Season 1 being a hit. The first Mandalorian spinoff, The Book of Boba Fett, wasn’t as well received by fans or critics as Disney would have liked. Not a great sign for Ahsoka.

On the other hand, Lucasfilm’s most recent Star Wars outing, Andor, drew rave reviews from fans and critics alike. The series, which stars Diego Luna as the character he originated in Rogue One, proved so successful it’s also getting a second season. Hopefully, for Disney, Ahsoka will be compared less to Fett and more to Andor.

Ahsoka doesn’t have a concrete release date at this time, but according to series star Rosario Dawson, “Ahsoka, that’s going to probably come out in the Fall.” That means that fans will be waiting quite a while for Ahsoka Season 2. Luckily there is plenty of other Star Wars content on the horizon to tide them over until then.
