It looks like our previous scoops are all but confirmed with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Coulson heading back to the Marvel Universe

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Special Agent Phil Coulson could be definitively heading back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After our numerous scoops about the group and the characters from the show wrapping into Marvel’s new plans, Kevin Fiege came pretty darn close to confirming this was going to happen sooner than later. If we can take his words with even a grain of salt (and I think we can) they will be part of Marvel going forward.

Kevin Feige had an interview with Decider in which he detailed some future plans for Marvel and how different characters from other production companies might begin to take shape in the current universe. It was an enlightening set of answers and the Marvel boss made it pretty clear he wanted as many characters to be part of things moving forward as possible. This was on the heals of us reporting that both Agent Coulson, and other Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. characters were all but locks to reappear sometime during Marvel’s Phase Four.

There were a couple of telling things he had to say about Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Coulson in particular. The first was in response to why the Disney+ shows had been more popular than other entities on different platforms:

“I think there are legions of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fans and Daredevil fans and Jessica Jones fans and Luke Cage fans that would disagree with you in terms of success or not. There’s a very big fanbase for those shows,”

This is Feige admitting he knows there are plenty of fans out there that would love to see these characters fold back into the universe. Then, he was specifically asked about the rights to the characters like Agent Coulson in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and whether he could speak to the rumors about them legally being brought back into the mix:

“No, I’ll just say there are often rumors that are true and there are often rumors that are not true. It was very fun having Clark Gregg come back to the MCU in Captain Marvel, a founding, important member of the MCU for us, Agent Coulson. But everything else, we just have to see…”

It’s this second quote that seems to all but confirm our previous scoop. Kevin Feige is specifically using a character’s name, singling him out among a huge group and detailing why we’d have to wait on the others. This seems, like more than anything, that he’s fully aware of the plan for Agent Coulson. It’s likely the key components of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be making an appearance. Feige, for all his coy takes, knows exactly what is happening in this universe and though he chooses his words wisely, it’s pretty clear the point he’s trying to make.

As per our previous scoops, Agent Coulson and Daisy Johnson Quake (Chloe Bennett) were going to be part of an upcoming Marvel series in some form. That’s most likely to be the limited series Secret Invasion. The story would fit perfectly into the previous arcs for these characters, especially Coulson considering it hinges on a secret conspiracy that has the Krulls having fully infiltrated Earth as imposters. Coulson dealt with this group, along with Nick Fury during the events of Captain Marvel.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ran for seven seasons on ABC but during that time existed outside the concurrent Marvel Universe. It was very much its own show and because of the aforementioned character rights, didn’t fold in others from the Avengers timeline. But it still told cool stories and built up a background for guys like Coulson and Quake. They more than deserve to get a second run in the Marvel Universe and have been important characters along the way.
