Marvel sorceress Agatha Harkness might have a leak in her cauldron. That’s the only way to explain how actress Patti LuPone was able to spill the tea about her upcoming debut in the MCU. According to Entertainment Weekley, Lupone revealed on The View that she would be playing a witch named Lilia Calderu on the highly anticipated Agatha: Coven of Chaos.

“I play Lilia Calderu, who apparently is in the Marvel world,” LuPone said when asked about the WandaVision spinoff. “I researched her, she’s hot, she’s really hot, she’s got a great body and hair,”

The Steven Universe actress admitted that she knew almost nothing about what she refers to as the “Marvel world” but described Calderu as a “450-year-old Sicilian witch” with a focus on divination and tarot. Pattie went on to list the other members of her Agatha: Coven of Chaos coven. LuPone mentioned title character actress Kathyrn Hahn as well as Aubrey Plaza and Heartstopper‘s Joe Locke.

LuPone revealed that filming on Agatha: Coven of Chaos was still ongoing. When pressed for a possible release date, the actress guessed sometime in 2024. Pattie’s remarks to The View crew were the first details revealed publicly about the star’s Agatha character.

If the name Lilia Calderu doesn’t ring any bells, don’t worry. Even the most hardcore Marvel Zombies would have a hard time picking Calderu out of a lineup. The character only made four appearances in Marvel comics, and most of those are flashbacks. Poor Lilia had the misfortune of dying in the very first comic she appeared in, Marvel Premiere #12, from August 1973.

While the obscure Calderu might seem like an odd choice for one of the main characters in Agatha: Coven of Chaos, she is associated with the Book of Cagliostro, a magical artifact introduced in the first Doctor Strange movie. Lilia’s connection to the book, along with her relationship to Doctor Strange baddie Mordo, makes her the perfect character to include in Agatha’s coven.

LuPone’s revelation that her version of Lilia Calderu is Sicilian makes for an interesting change from the source material. Given that the Marvel Database lists Lilia’s alias as the “Witch-Queen of the Gypsies,” it makes sense that Disney would change her background for Agatha: Coven of Chaos. Lilia’s first appearance doesn’t portray the Romani people in the best light, and her original characterization as a Transylvanian sexpot dressed like a stereotypical Romani seductress wouldn’t exactly fly with today’s more progressive nerds.

Not much is known about Agatha: Coven of Chaos beyond what Pattie LuPone revealed on The View. The character of Agatha Harkness was introduced in the very first Disney+ Marvel series WandaVision and quickly became a fan favorite. It’s no exaggeration to say that Kathryn Hahn stole many of the scenes she was in, making Coven of Chaos one of the most anticipated projects Marvel has in the pipeline.

Agatha: Coven of Chaos will be Marvel’s first major foray back into the world of the mystical arts following 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and will most likely pick up some of the threads left dangling at the end of that film. Fans have speculated that the series might include a cameo from either Scarlet Witch or Doctor Strange. While the project is being kept tightly under wraps, any cameos from Wanda or Strange would most likely occur near the end of the series, possibly in the finale, if at all.

With the hype surrounding Agatha: Coven of Chaos hitting an all-time high, now would be a good time to go back and listen to “Agatha All Along” for the 376th time in preparation for the show’s eventual release. R.I.P. Sparky.
