Popular Adult TV Show Starts Second Anime Season On Max
While the regular Rick and Morty isn’t releasing a new season until sometime in 2025, there is a show out there to tide over all the fans. Known as Rick and Morty: The Anime, this spin-off is in the process of releasing its first full season. Previously, the Rick and Morty anime only had five short pilot episodes, which were released in 2020 and 2021.
The Rick and Morty Anime
So, what makes this spin-off an anime? Well, for one, the Rick and Morty anime is created by Takashi Sano (Tower of God), a Japanese animation director. The series also has a different art style, more associated with anime than Western animation, and is definitely different from the original Rick and Morty series.
Enjoy Dub Or Sub
You can also choose to watch the Rick and Morty anime with Japanese voice actors and subtitles or in English. Interestingly, the Japanese voice actors for the anime happen to be the same ones used for the Japanese dub of the original Rick and Morty series. The series is even officially listed on My Anime List, though it’s too early for it to have many reviews as of yet.
Yes, It’s Canon
Though categorized as a spin-off, the Rick and Morty anime still features Morty (Keisuke Chiba, Gabriel Regojo) and Rick (Yohei Tadano, Joe Daniels) as the two main characters, and many familiar support characters will be returning as well. The story is even reported as canon to the franchise.
This is because the franchise is set up to be a multiverse story. And, with it being the chaotic multiverse, pretty much anything can be canon.
So it’s not really a spin-off at all. In fact, when Jason DeMarco, who is in charge of action and anime for Adult Swim, was asked about the series by Inverse at the San Diego Comic-Con, he said that it wasn’t really a spin-off at all, stating, “This isn’t a spinoff, this is [Sano’s] reinterpretation of the characters and themes from the original. He had the freedom to interpret them how he wanted within the framework that was already laid down by the show.”
The Plot
The plot of the Rick and Morty anime still follows the two main characters but is set in an alternate world. In this universe, history has been heavily altered by costumed adventurers, basically superheroes. People quickly became disenchanted by these people, and superheroes were banned.
In 1985, a previous hero who turned into a government operative when vigilantes were banned is found dead. Another former superhero, known as Rorschach, starts to hunt for his killer, forcing several other retired heroes out of hiding to find the person responsible. What he doesn’t know is that in taking steps to solve the case, he could be throwing the world into a disastrous war.
And, of course, what better time for Morty and Rick to get involved?
