Adam Sandler Netflix Sci-Fi Drama Spaceman Looks Extraordinary

Adam Sandler may have built his career from being a funny man but over the last two decades, he’s shown off his drama skills and will be doing so again in Netflix’s upcoming sci-fi feature, Spaceman. The streamer has dropped its first look teaser of the movie that follows Sandler’s astronaut traveling alone in space.

Directed by Johan Renck, the man behind HBO’s hit historical drama series Chernobyl, the film promises to transport audiences to another world and feel the pressure that’s weighing on Sandler’s character as their own.

Based on the novel Spaceman of Bohemia by Jaroslav Kalfar, the cast of the sci-fi drama includes Kunal Nayyar (The Big Bang Theory), Isabella Rossellini (Julia), and Lena Olin (The Ninth Gate).

Adam Sandler wanders through a green forest in the first teaser for Spaceman. With every step he takes, a mysterious voice-over reveals more of the film’s plot, which sounds like it’s setting the story up for a post-apocalyptic edge. Though he may seem alone in the distant reaches of space, the voice promises that it will be by his side throughout his current difficulties.

Along with Adam Sandler, Spaceman also stars The Batman’s Paul Dano as the ominous voice that can be heard in the teaser. Dano will voice the character, Hanuš, who is said to be a sort of stowaway on the craft that Sandler’s Jakub is traveling on. With Hanuš’s help, Jakub hopes to return to Earth and make things right with his wife, Lenka (Carey Mulligan).

While it isn’t clear what the issue is between Adam Sandler’s Jakub and Carey Mulligan’s Lenka, the logline for Spaceman reveals that the pair had been drifting apart long before Jakub set out on his six-month-long mission into the cosmos.

Over the years, Adam Sandler has continued to hold steady to his reputation as one of the best comedians of our time but it’s his performances in films like Spaceman that really show the spread of talent that he has as an actor.

The more he wanders the solar system, the more Jakub thinks to himself that perhaps he’s let a good thing go and he won’t have a life and love to return to when he makes his return. All the while, Hanuš will be comforting the astronaut, helping him dive into his psyche and hopefully right the wrongs on his home planet.

For Adam Sandler, Spaceman serves as the latest team-up with Netflix as the pair have a long history of creating fan-favorite content together.

In 2023 alone, he appeared alongside Jennifer Aniston in Murder Mystery 2, his real-life daughters in You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, and in the animated feature, Leo, as well as producing credits on the streamer’s comedy, The Out-Laws.

This will be his first film of the kind in two years following 2022’s The Hustle, which was preceded by his critically acclaimed turn in Benny and Josh Safdie’s 2019 crime thriller, Uncut Gems.

Spaceman is preparing to take off for its premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival in February, before landing on Netflix on March 1, 2024.
