Adam Sandler and the Safdie Brothers are teaming up once again, this time for Netflix. There is little information about the untitled project at this time, but the Safdies definitely bring the best out of Sandler, so this will be one to keep an eye on. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Sandler indicated the movie would start filming in winter, so hopefully, we can find out more sooner than later.
The last time Adam Sandler teamed up with the directing team of Josh and Bennie Safdie was for Uncut Gems, which was easily one of Sandler’s best roles. Uncut Gems followed a New York jeweler who takes a big risk to pay off his debts. The kinetic thriller starred Sandler along with Julia Fox, Idina Menzel, LaKeith Stanfield, Eric Bogosian, and Kevin Garnett.
Although many thought Sandler would land an Oscar nomination for his performance in Uncut Gems, he got snubbed and the film was ignored by the Academy altogether. With Adam Sandler and the Safdie Brothers reuniting again on Netflix, maybe they’ll get a second chance and the Academy can right this wrong. Of course, we’ll have to wait and see if their second collaboration can live up to Uncut Gems.
Uncut Gems was the last feature that the Safdie Bros directed, so they must love working with Adam Sandler if they’re doing two films in a row with him. While Josh Safdie has remained relatively quiet since 2019 — only directing a short and a music video with his brother — Benny has been pretty busy with his acting career. Since Uncut Gems, Benny Safdie has had roles in Licorice Pizza, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and the upcoming Christopher Nolan film Oppenheimer.
As always, Adam Sandler has been incredibly busy since 2019, taking on an array of roles in various projects (including the aforementioned Safdie-directed short). While Sandler is known for doing mostly comedies, his dramatic roles like Uncut Gems are where his acting chops really shine, and his most recent Netflix movie Hustle leans more toward the dramatic category. Hustle stars Sandler as a basketball scout who finds a talented streetball player in Spain that he prepares for the NBA draft.
Hustle is another quiet hit for Adam Sandler, as his charming performance and the movie itself received acclaim from critics and audiences alike. The film starred Sandler alongside real-life NBA star Juancho Hernangómez. The rest of the cast was rounded out by Queen Latifah, Ben Foster, Robert Duvall, Heidi Gardner, and Anthony Edwards with LeBron James on as producer.
If you want to see Adam Sandler in Hustle, you can check out the film on Netflix. Sandler’s next film will be on Netflix as well, with Spaceman set for a 2023 release. Spaceman will once again be a dramatic turn for Sandler, as he plays a man who becomes the first astronaut for the Czech Republic.
Spaceman is adapted from the book Spaceman of Bohemia and will star Adam Sandler alongside Paul Dano, Carey Mulligan, Kunal Nayyar, and Isabella Rossellini. Make sure to check it out when it comes out on Netflix in 2023. In the meantime, we’ll keep you updated about the untitled Safdie and Sandler project.
