Adam Sandler Is Being Officially Crowned The King Of Comedy, We Are Not Joking
Adam Sandler is going to be awarded the title King of Comedy from the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards.
Adam Sandler is many things, a movie star, a producer, a writer, a singer, a stand-up comedian, a Mark Twain Prize for American Humor winner, and now he is also The King of Comedy. As reported by Variety, Sandler will accept the honor at the 2023 Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards, airing on March 4th, while sitting on a giant throne. For all of his faults and the uneven quality of his movies, Sandler did provide the world with Airheads, Mr. Deeds, Happy Gilmore, and Pixels, which somehow makes him worthy of the title King of Comedy.
The award, which is being given out for the first time, marks Sandler’s 11th Kids Choice Award, putting him behind only Spongebob Squarepants for most awards won. Right behind the star of The Wedding Singer are Will Smith and Selena Gomez, but neither of those mega-stars has earned an award with the prestige of King of Comedy.
Announced as being involved in the Kids Choice Awards will be Awkwafina, Lil Baby, Halle Bailey, Pete Davidson, Melissa McCarthy, MrBeast, Chris Pine, Anthony Ramos, Michelle Rodriguez, and Seth Rogen. The only live performance announced so far is Bebe Rexha, singing “I’m Good (Blue),” which is mostly notable for sampling the most infectious earworm of 1999s. More performers and social media influencers will be announced later, while Charli D’Amelio and Nate Burleson are the hosts for the evening.
Adam Sandler is clearly not winning King of Comedy this year for his latest film, Hustle, a comedy-drama about an NBA scout. Rather, the award represents his overall career, which is debatable for such a lofty title. By going low-brow in his first series of films, Sandler created a string of comedy classics that still hold up today, but as time passed, he had less and less success.
Not every star has a perfect hit rate, but Jack and Jill, You Don’t Mess With The Zohan, and Grown-Ups are clear steps down from Big Daddy, 50 First Dates, and Billy Madison. Only recently did Sandler find success in a live-action role, starring opposite Jennifer Aniston in 2019’s Netflix original Murder Mystery, followed by the underrated Uncut Gems, which proves he can also do drama. The kids voting for the Kids Choice Awards likely don’t care about his career resurgence; they’re watching his older films for the first time or really love Hotel Transylvania.
This year’s Kid Choice Awards has another first beyond crowning Adam Sandler as the first King of Comedy by having winners descending to the stage in a UFO. A Nickelodeon vice president, Paul Medford, hinted that the awards show will include tech-enhanced performances, surreal set pieces, and tons of slime. Some of the announced nominees for this year include Jenna Ortega, Jack Harlow, and Letitia Wright, with Stranger Things as the most nominated series.
While we, as adults, can roll our eyes and find it absurd that Adam Sandler is being crowned as King of Comedy, the show is for the kids, and if another generation appreciates one of the greatest former Saturday Night Live cast members of all time, the kids are alright.
