Adam Sandler is doing perhaps the most Adam Sandler thing one can imagine: casting his entire family in an upcoming movie. Sandler is well known for casting a consistent group of friends in his films, including David Spade, Kevin James, and Steve Buscemi (and several dozen more). It is slightly less well-known that his wife Jackie and daughters Sadie and Sunny frequently pop up in his movies in small roles, but that’s family for you. According to Variety, Adam Sandler is going whole hog this time and having all three appear in prominent roles in his upcoming Netflix film You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah

You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah is an adaptation of a popular coming-of-age novel by Fiona Rosenbloom, in which a young girl in the early 2000s discovers her best friend kissing her crush on the eve of her bat mitzvah. As one can imagine, things get very dramatic and adolescent from there, and everyone learns some lessons. While Adam Sandler is more known for his broader, grosser comedies like The Waterboy and Billy Madison than family films, he actually has a surprisingly robust filmography of family-friendly movies like Bedtime Stories and Click. Jackie, Sadie, and Sunny have actually appeared in a number of these; Sadie and Sunny both have IMDb pages that would make most working actors envious.

The casting of Adam Sandler’s actual family in You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah might be an evolution of the actor’s long-held policy of having scripts altered to be set in locations his family wants to go on vacation. According to an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Adam Sandler first pulled this trick for the romantic comedy 50 First Dates; the original screenplay called for the story to take place in Seattle, the legendarily dreary pearl of the Pacific Northwest. Adam Sandler came up the suggestion that it be set in the much sunnier Hawaii, and ever since, he had pushed for movies to be set in places he could bring the whole family to.

It is not clear who each of Adam Sandler’s family members might be playing in You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, but logic suggests either Sadie or Sunny are probably playing the central character. The film will also co-star Broadway legend Idina Menzel (who portrayed Adam Sandler’s spouse in the Safdie Brothers drama Uncut Gems) and frequent Sandler collaborator Luis Guzman.

The upcoming film is the latest in Adam Sandler’s incredibly lucrative deal with Netflix, which has been reported to be worth $350 million dollars. While few of the movies that have been produced under the deal have been well-received by critics, Adam Sandler movies have rarely lived or died based on critical appeal. In addition to You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah, Adam Sandler has also been announced to star in Murder Mystery 2, the sequel to his 2019 Netflix comedy with Jennifer Aniston.
