Adam Driver Reveals Star Wars Future And We’re Shocked
Adventures in a galaxy far, far away will continue, but Kylo Ren won’t be a part of them. Adam Driver, star of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, has made it clear he’s done with the franchise that made him famous. The Ferrari actor was a guest on a recent episode of the Smartless podcast when the subject of his potential return to the Star Wars universe came up.
Adam Driver Confirms He’s Done With Star Wars
“They’re doing stuff, but not with me,” Adam Driver said, referring to the continuation of the Star Wars saga past Episode IX. Host Sean Haynes attempted to clarify Driver’s statement with a follow-up question. “You’re done because the character’s done?” Haynes asked.”Yes.” responded Driver.
The Actor Says Star Wars Drained Him
The 40-year-old actor went on to admit that making the Star Wars sequels was “exhausting” for him. “I made it more exhausting than it should have been,” Adam Driver confessed. The actor found working on such a big production stressful. Prior to The Force Awakens, Driver had mostly acted in smaller indie fare where the directors were forced to shoot fast out of necessity.
He Was Dissapointed With The Character’s Progression
Adam Driver found the slower pacing afforded a major big-budget project like Star Wars hard to get used to. In addition to the speed of the shoot, Driver recently expressed his frustration with Kylo Ren’s arc throughout the three films.
According to Driver, Ren was never supposed to have a redemption arc like his Grandfather, Anakin Skywalker. On the contrary, Kylo Ren was initially supposed to become more evil as the trilogy progressed. Adam Driver claims that he and director J. J. Abrams had agreed to an “overall arc” for Ben Solo that was to be the opposite of Vader’s journey.
Rather than Vader starting out at his most evil and becoming more conflicted and vulnerable as the series wore on, Kylo Ren was to start The Force Awakens weak and unsure of himself, becoming his most evil self by the time of The Rise of Skywalker.
Adam Driver’s Departure Just Makes Sense
Unfortunately, Kylo Ren’s character arc, much like the sequel trilogy as a whole, suffered from a lack of cohesive vision and planning. Never before have three films tried so hard to impede each other’s progress. Considering how much Kylo Ren was changed—seemingly on the fly—it’s no wonder that Adam Driver doesn’t want to return in future Star Wars films.Of course, there’s a much bigger reason why Kylo Ren is unlikely to show up in any post-Rise of Skywalker Star Wars films. He’s dead. Adam Driver’s conflicted Sith-wannabe met his end at the hands of a resurrected Palpatine during The Rises of Skywalker‘s climax.Okay, technically, Ren died after transferring his last bit of life essence into a mortally wounded Rey through an awkward Force kiss, but that’s just semantics.
Rey Returns In New Jedi Order
The point is, unless he appears as a Force ghost, Kylo Ren can’t really come back. And Adam Driver doesn’t seem like the kind of actor who would be content returning to Star Wars simply to cameo as a ghost.Meanwhile, Star Wars sequel star Daisy Ridley will be returning to a galaxy far, far away. Unlike Adam Driver, Ridley is more than happy to ignite her lightsaber once again in service of Disney. Rey will be getting her own New Jedi Order movie directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy in the near future and while there has been no indication yet if either John Boyega or Oscar Isaac might be joining her, neither has publically ruled out the idea.Source: Smartless
