The Last Duel – December 25, 2010
The next film from Alien/Blade Runner director Ridley Scott is a historical piece set in Medieval France. The script for The Last Duel, written by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, stars Damon and Adam Driver as best friends ordered to fight to the death when one is accused of raping the other’s wife.
ET got to visit the set and leaked this extremely crazy looking photo of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon dressed up in medieval garb…
There’s nothing magical about the movie as far as we know, but they both look like they’re cosplaying as wizards. Meanwhile Adam Driver looks like this…
He’s basically just Kylo Ren with old fashioned armor on instead of that plastic stuff Storm Troopers usually wear.
Uncharted – March 5, 2021
The popular Uncharted video game series is brought to life as an action movie prequel, starring Tom Holland (Spider-Man) as a young Nathan Drake to Mark Wahlberg’s (Daddy’s Home, Lone Survivor) Sully. The story supposedly follows young Drake as he meets up with Sully and the two become partners in their globe-trotting treasure hunting adventures.
After years in development and lots of delays, star Tom Holland says Uncharted starts shooting in March of 2020. He tells IGN: “So yeah, we start shooting in like four weeks. Mark Wahlberg is going to be amazing as Sully. The stunt department that we have out there in Berlin have done an amazing job already, prepping the stunts, and it’s going to be an exciting one.”
As for the plot, he offered a few more clues. Tom Holland says, “One of my favorite video games ever is the fourth Uncharted game. And lots of the inspiration from the film has come from that game in particular.“
Jackass 4 – July 2, 2021
Jackass 4 is happening and Paramount has already given it a release date. It’s safe to assume they wouldn’t have set a release date for it if at least a large portion of the original cast wasn’t set to return. Johnny Knoxville and the gang are Jackass, after all.
There had been some speculation that Steve-O might be holding out for more money and wouldn’t return, but when fans saw him doing this, they assumed that meant he was back…
Unfortunately Steve-O did not duct tape himself to a skyscraper for Jackass 4. He did it to promote his new special Gnarly.
That doesn’t mean he’s not in Jackass 4 though. In fact he has already posted video from one stunt which will probably show up in the movie. That video features Steve-O having UFC fighter Jon Jones rip off his ear. Here it is, be warned it’s pretty bloody and awful…
There’s no confirmation that these are outtakes from Jackass 4 but it seems likely. Steve-O is crazy, but not crazy enough to do things like this without getting paid for them. So look forward to seeing the full video in which Jon Jones bashes off a piece of Steve-O’s ear when the action resumes in Jackass 4.
Fast & Furious 9 – April 2, 2021
This ninth action movie in the Fast franchise brings back all the series favorites. Vin Diesel returns as Dominic Toretto, who has retired and settled down with Michelle Rodriguez’s Letty. Not much else is known about the plot but Justin Lin is back in the driver’s seat for the fifth time as director. John Cena joins the cast in an undisclosed role.
The first teaser trailer for the movie has arrived and it begins with Vin Diesel fixing a tractor. Watch…
Don’t worry Fast & Furious fans, FF9 won’t be all hanging out on a farm fixing tractors. The full and sure to be action packed first Fast & Furious 9 trailer arrives on just a few days.
Disney’s Jungle Cruise – July 30, 2021
Disney is hoping Dwayne Johnson (Rampage, San Andreas) can start an action movie franchise similar to Pirates of the Caribbean with this movie based on the popular Disneyland attraction. Johnson is Frank, a riverboat captain, who is hired by a scientist and her brother to find the Tree of Life. It is said the Tree holds healing powers. Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns) is on board as the scientist.
The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard – 2021
A sequel to the popular The Hitman’s Bodyguard sees the return of all three stars from the first action movie. Samuel L. Jackson, Ryan Reynolds and Salma Hayek are all back in this action film that finds bodyguard played Reynolds teaming up with assassin played by Jackson to save wife, played by Hayek, from more trouble. If this one is as fun as the first, it’ll be a sure hit.
It was originally supposed to be released in 2020, but now like so many action movies this one has been delayed til an unspecified time in 2021.
Sherlock Holmes 3 – December 22, 2021
Sherlock Holmes 3 is confirmed happening with Robert Downey Jr. set to return as Sherlock Holmes and Jude Law as Dr. John Watson. It’s a strange action franchise but one that has somehow made a lot of money. So it makes sense that the studio would be keen to have more.
- Go in depth on Sherlock Holmes 3 with our Complete Sherlock Holmes 3 Guide.
Bruised – TBA
Bruised is Halle Berry’s directorial debut. In it the 53-year-old actress stars as an MMA fighter. A few years ago Berry taking on a role like this might have seemed strange, but she re-proved her action credentials with an eye-opening turn in John Wick 3 alongside Keanu Reeves.
The plot of Bruised has her playing an fighter trying to reclaim custody of her son while restarting her MMA career.
Action Movies In Development
Gladiator 2 | Early Development
Gladiator was without question the biggest, most talked about, most important movie of the year 2000. It was only the fact that the movie’s hero dies in the end that kept Hollywood from immediately making a sequel to the action movie. But in the modern era, death is no longer an obstacle.
We’ve heard rumors that Gladiator 2 might be happening for years, but now it seems like it’s really a thing that’s being worked on.
Connie Nielson was one of the stars of Gladiator and she offered this update on where Gladiator 2 is at to EW: “So, we did hear from the producers. I think it’s just a question of which film is coming first in Ridley’s very tight schedule. And then I think it’s a question of COVID and can we get back to work. But I would be interested in doing [the film], for sure. I mean, it’s obviously a wonderful project, so of course I would be interested.“
We’ve heard before that Gladiator director Ridley Scott has a bizarre resurrection plan to bring Russell Crowe’s Maximus back for the action sequel. Scott says, “I can bring him back. I know how to bring him back. I talked him into how I’m bringing him back. I use the [body] of a dying warrior as a portal that could bring somebody back.“
G.I. Joe Reboot | Early Development
Paramount really wants G.I. Joe to be a big franchise for them, so they keep making movies even though they never quite hit. They’re trying again with it and word is they think Gal Gadot is the missing piece that could finally make this Go Joe puzzle work.
Word is that in addition to trying to get Dwayne Johnson to return as Roadblock (yes he was in one of the G.I. Joe movies), they want Gal Gadot to step in as Lady Jaye. Really the smarter choice here for them would be to save their money and spend it on something like Star Trek. If The Rock couldn’t save this franchise, odds that anyone else can are pretty slim.
Now You See Me 3 | In Development
When it debuted in 2013 Now You See Me was an unlikely candidate to turn into a franchise. Yet here we are talking about Now You See Me 3. The story of a group of magicians turned robbers continues. Lionsgate has officially announced Now You See Me 3 as being in development with Eric Warren Singer hired to write the script.
The press release that came with Lionsgate’s announcement says Now You See Me 3, “will capture the fun, magic, and spirit of the original, introducing new characters into the world while also creating opportunities for the original cast to reprise their roles.” That sounds suspiciously like one of those tired Hollywood tropes where the original cast returns to hand things off to a new generation.
Adding fuel to the spinoff fire is the fact that none of the actors from the previous movie are signed on to this one. Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, Lizzy Caplan, Daniel Radcliffe, and Mark Ruffalo could still end up signing on, but that announcement makes it sound like Lionsgate is setting us up to be disappointed.
The Saint | Active Development
If you haven’t seen the 1997 Val Kilmer spy thriller The Saint, get moving and start streaming. It’s one of the most underrated movies of the genre and it’s based on an also pretty underrated book from the 1920’s. And now it’s getting a reboot.
The movie tells the story of a man who goes by the name Simon Templar, a criminal for hire who goes on adventures around the world robbing from the rich and giving to the poor. And next he’ll be played by Chris Pine.
Originally Chris Pratt was in talks to star in The Saint reboot, but it seems the other Chris swept in and took the role. This is just speculation, but I’d assume Chris Pratt wanted more money. Still, Chris Pine (star of Star Trek and co-star of Wonder Woman) should be a good fit to tackle the character. He’s no Val Kilmer, but this property is so good you should go into it with high expectations.
This new action movie will be directed by Dexter Fletcher and written by Seth Grahame-Smith.
Hobbs & Shaw 2 | Active Development
The Fast & Furious spinoff Hobbs & Shaw only made around $170 million in the United States, but it grossed over $800 million worldwide. So a sequel was almost guaranteed.
We assumed it was happening but it wasn’t confirmed until The Rock said this about Hobs & Shaw 2 on Instagram: “We are developing now the next film, the next movie, and I’m pretty excited about it. [We] just gotta figure out the creative right now, and the direction we’re going to go.“
So it’s happening and The Rock is in it. You can bet that Jason Statham will be back too. Sounds like even they don’t know what it’s about yet, but we’ll let you know as soon as we hear more.
The Last Witch Hunter 2 | Early Development
Normally when a movie flops hard at the box office and is generally reviled by critics, no one even talks about making a sequel to it let alone actually gets to work on making it. Even box office flops that people LOVED like Dredd 2 don’t seem to get sequels. Yet here we are, talking about a sequel to The Last Witch Hunter. And The Last Witch Hunter 2 is more than just talk, it’s actually happening.
Vin Diesel confirmed they’re working on The Last Witch Hunter 2 to Collider. Even he seems kind of surprised this sequel is happening saying, “When a Last Witch Hunter comes out and it doesn’t destroy the box office you, under the old thinking, would go, ‘Well, maybe I should focus on something else.’ But nowadays what’s fascinating is that movies find you somehow.”
So how far along are they in making The Last Witch Hunter 2 a reality? Vin explains, “Lionsgate is coming and saying, ‘We’re putting a writer on for the next one.’ That’s kinda cool! … And this is just recent, by the way. But it’s funny that you mentioned Last Witch Hunter because I’m in a meeting with Lionsgate and they’re actively creating the sequel to The Last Witch Hunter.”
So basically they’ve just started working on the script, but even the notion that Lionsgate would be willing to pay someone to write a sequel to a box office flop with a 17% score on Rotten Tomatoes is shocking. Again, we’re still waiting on someone to take seriously the idea of Dredd 2 (Dredd has a 79% on RT), and that movie’s a Lionsgate property too.
The Mummy | Early Development
With The Invisible Man receiving rave reviews Universal Pictures is looking to get more of their classic movie monsters in theaters. Next up: The Mummy.
They tried to resurrect The Mummy a couple of years ago with Tom Cruise, but that failed utterly. Now word is they are going a different direction and working on a project that’s more like the Brendan Fraser, action oriented, period-specific Mummy series. Except they’re doing it without Brendan Fraser. Instead of Fraser they are reportedly talking to Ryan Gosling to lead the redo.
Indiana Jones 5 | In Production
Lucasfilm and Disney have confirmed that Indiana Jones 5 really is happening. What’s more it’s happening soon. The movie will start shooting in April of 2020, according to Harrison Ford.
Here’s what Harrison had to say about returning to shoot more Indiana Jones, “Y’know, running around in tight pants and high boots. I’ll give you a more appropriate answer considering that I’m gonna start doing Indiana Jones in about two months, I’m always delighted to come back to these characters. When we have the opportunity to make another it’s because people have enjoyed them. I feel obliged to make sure that our efforts are as ambitious as they were when we started. You have a sense of responsibility to your customers.“
Harrison Ford is currently 77-years-old and most people thought he was way too old to play Indiana Jones when Indiana Jones 4 was released back in 2008. So how much is he really in this movie? Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy clarified…
“Oh, Harrison Ford will be involved. It’s not a reboot. It’s a continuation.“
– -Kathleen Kennedy on whether Harrison Ford will do Indiana Jones 5
It’s worth noting that in the above quote she says he “will be involved”. She didn’t say he’ll star in it or that it’ll be all about him. However, Kennedy does insist that when it comes to Harrison Ford returning, “Oh, yeah. He can’t wait. He absolutely is [involved].” Again that word “involved”.
It could be, in fact given Harrison Ford’s age it seems entirely likely, that Indiana Jones 5 will be all about handing off this action movie franchise to a new actor. They actually kind of tried to do that with Indiana Jones 4, which involved Shia LaBeouf as his son Mutt. But Shia LaBeouf is crazy and nobody really liked his character or that movie. So now they’ll try again.
One of the rumors around this production is that Indy 5 will actually be about Indiana Jones’s daughter. Yes, apparently he had a secret daughter nobody knew about in addition to that secret son from the last movie. That also fits with Disney’s most recent mandate to make more of their franchises diverse.
Mad Max: The Wasteland | In Development
Mad Max: Fury Road is getting a sequel called Mad Max: The Wasteland. It’s a prequel so expect an entirely new cast. Go in-depth with our full Mad Max: The Wasteland Guide.
The A-Team – TBA
According to We Got This Covered, Disney is developing a new A-Team movie. The franchise was acquired by the company in their buyout of Fox’s library and they’re now working on developing a new film.
The A-Team was turned into a movie once, back in 2010, but that movie was more of a reboot of the TV show than a sequel. Word is that this version will actually be a sequel to the television show, existing in the same universe as the beloved characters we know. That also leaves room for Mr. T to appear in a cameo, maybe as a grizzled elderly veteran coaching up the new kids.
Currently rumor has Disney considering Will Smith and Guardians of the Galaxy’s Dave Bautista to star in their new A-Team action movie. If they can’t get them, Disney is eager to snare some kind of big name talent to topline the film, so expect this to end up starring someone equally noteworthy.
Enemy Of The State 2 – TBA
The original Enemy of the State was released in 1998, one year after Men in Black, during the period in Will Smith’s career where he’d just begun establishing himself as a huge box office draw. Back then he was as known for the music videos he’d release with the movies he starred in, as much as the movies themselves.
But Enemy of the State was different. A taut, well-crafted action movie which let Will Smith show off his acting ability by playing off one of the greatest actors of all time in Gene Hackman. It opened at $20 million, earning over $100 million during its run, and Hollywood viewed it as a modest hit. Now, more than twenty years later, it’s coming back.
We Got This Covered says a sequel is in the works with Will Smith being targeted to return and star as Robert Clayton Dean. Since the events of the first movie he now works for the government, and is sent to track down a young man accused of a cyber crime. When Dean discovers his target is innocent, he sets out to try and help him clear his name. It sounds a lot like Smith is taking on the Gene Hackman role from the first movie, with the newcomer as the new protagonist.
The themes of the original Enemy of the State are more relevant than ever. It focused on ideas of government corruption and the use of facial recognition and other technology to spy on citizens. At the time a lot of it seemed like science fiction, but now that science fiction is our reality.
Bad Boys 4 – TBA
The third action movie entry in the Bad Boys series earned solid critical reviews and jumped off to a solid start at the box office with a $6.36 million opening night. Now we’re getting another one. Bad Boys 4 is being worked on.
Chris Bremner, who wrote Bad Boys For Life (aka Bad Boys 3), has been hired by Sony to write Bad Boys 4. THR says Sony’s plan is to have less lag time between Bad Boys For Life and the release of Bad Boys 4, than there was between Bad Boys 2 and 3. That means the movie is being fast-tracked and they’ll be pushing hard to get it out as soon as possible.
Both Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are expected to return for Bad Boys 4. Of course, there is no movie without the two of them, so if one of them suddenly decides not to be involved the whole project will die on the vine. But for now, it looks like they’re Bad Boys for life.
Kung Fu Remake – TBA
The race to mine the past for new ideas continues, this time Universal Pictures has gone all the way back to 1972 and bought the rights to the classic television series Kung Fu. They’re planning to turn it into a movie and work is already underway.
The original series was a hit due almost entirely to the presence of David Carradine as a master martial artist serenely wandering the old west and kicking ass. In the eighties the series was resurrected as Kung Fu: The Legend Continues and it featured Carradine’s Shaolin monk character Kwai Chang Caine and his son, kicking ass together in the mean streets of the modern world.
The new Universal Pictures movie will remake the 1972 version of the story, set in the Old West. Deadline says they’ve hired the David Leitch to turn Kung Fu into a movie. If you’re not familiar with Leitch’s considerable action movie credentials, he was the co-director of John Wick, director of Deadpool 2, and more recently the director of the action hit Hobbs & Shaw. He knows what he’s doing and Kung Fu couldn’t possibly be in better hands.
Ed Spielman, the original creator of the 1972 Kung Fu television series, will also be involved as an executive producer.
Lethal Weapon 5 | Early Development
I don’t think anyone saw this sequel coming. Danny Glover and Mel Gibson are ancient. Mel Gibson has been persona non-grata in Hollywood for years following some of his drunken tirades. Yet somehow, this is a movie that not only seems to be in development, it’s in development with Glover and Gibson set to return.
The news comes from THR where they interviewed franchise producer Dan Lin. He had this to say: “We’re trying to make the last Lethal Weapon movie. And Dick Donner’s coming back. The original cast is coming back. And it’s just amazing. The story itself is very personal to him. Mel and Danny are ready to go, so it’s about the script.”
“Dick Donner” is 89-year-old director Richard Donner. He directed all four previous Lethal Weapon movies, including the last one which debuted way back in 1998. That’s right, it’s been more than twenty-years now since Lethal Weapon 4.
The biggest surprise here is that anyone from the original cast is even able to return, let alone wants to. What will Lethal Weapon 5 look like if half the cast and its director are working from wheelchairs? It’s hard to imagine, but we may yet find out.
The Rocketeer Reboot | Early Development
Released back in 1991 to mediocre response, The Rocketeer has become something of a cult hit in the interim. Now that the movie is beloved, Disney sees potential to bring it back so they’ve been working on a reboot.
- For details on what they’re planning visit our guide to The Rocketeer 2.
ACTION MOVIES WITHOUT RELEASE DATES
Scott Pilgrim vs The World Re-Release – TBA
Scott Pilgrim vs The World was released in theaters nearly ten-years ago and never really got the fanfare it deserved. It’ll get a second chance when it returns to theaters for a tenth anniversary re-release. Director Edgar Wright confirmed the movie is coming back with this tweet…
There has also been talk of a cast reunion of some kind, to coincide with the movie’s tenth anniversary. When asked about a reunion star Michael Cera had this to say to ComicBook.com, “It really felt like an extended family. It’s 10 years later, so obviously life, for everybody, is doing their own thing. I would love, if it meant getting everyone to hang out for a while again, I would love that. Hopefully, this being the 10th anniversary, it will give us some excuse to get together.”
The Green Knight – TBA
The Green Knight is an action fantasy movie from writer and director David Lowrey. The story is based on the classic poem Sir Gawain and The Green Knight. Sir Gawain as you may recall was one of the Knights of the Round Table.
Here’s the first trailer for The Green Knight…
The Green Knight stars Dev Patel as Sir Gawain. So as you probably guessed, the title isn’t named after our hero. Ralph Ineson is the titular Green Knight. Sean Harris appears as King Arthur. Joel Edgerton co-stars in the action movie as Lord.
